There have been many conjectures as to the origin of the mark % and how it comes to moan per cent. None seem to be so probable as the following: — The figures “00” designate centum or hundred, and units placed before signify the number of hundreds. As one of 'the meaning of per is “ through,” the diagonal line drawn through or between the two ciphers will give the exact meaning of the symbol % i.c., a line drawn through or “per” “00,” (centum).
