ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS

INQUEST. At the inquest held on the body of George William Gunn, aged fiftyeight, widower, a greengrocer, of Waipukuran, before Dr H. W. M. Kendall, district coroner, the evidence showed that the deceased was found clothed lying in his bod at his residence. A glass containing a small quantity _of crystallised powder adhering to its side and also a spoon and water jug were found hesido the bed. A pill box showing traces of white crystallised powder marked “Poison” was found m the grato in the fireplace. The deceased’s housekeeper, Mrs Helen Tlar riot Lennox, stated that Gunn was in his usual state of health when she last saw him about three hours previously. Ho often threatened to commit suicide and when in drink on one occasion aad rushed into a room with a razor. He had no financial worries so far as she knew. Companions of the deceased gave evidence of having had three drinks with him at an hotel. Tho deceased then seemed to be sober and cheerful. Ur Cutlibert Raymond stated that a post mortem disclosed that the deceased had died from a convulsion, the result of having taken poison. Ike inquest was adjourned ior a week ponding further inquiries. FOOT CRUSHED. Frederick Coxhead, an employee of tho Harbour Board, had his foot crushed bv a piece of falling timber while working on the Victoria wharf yesterday. Tho injured man, who resides at 5 Grange street, was admitted to the hospital. PREMATURE EXPLOSION. Two employees were injured at Paekakariki Quarry at 8.30 this morning by a charge exploding prematurely. William Mather, a single man, was peppered with stones all over his face, arms, and hands, the missiles inflicting lacerated wounds, and both his eyes were injured. He was taken to hospital in Wellington, and his condition is satisfactory. James Tarpey was injured in one arm.—Press Association.
