LONELY MEN AND WOMEN

SEARCH FOR LIFE PARTNERS 'x ——— The appeal of tho ex-Mayor of Durham, Mr W. W. Wilkinson, for a national bureau to deal with the innumerable cases of men and women in quest of life-partners, says tho ‘ Sunday Despatch, lias met with a remarkable and immediate response. A perfect avalanche of appeals from all parts of Britain poured into the exmayor’s residence in Durham in one week recently. “ Those lonely people are causing mo great sorrow —l wish I could do something for thorn,” ho said. A man in the south writes that ho would like to meet someone aged about thirty to thirty-five, preferably a widow, if of a kindly disposition and jolly. He adds: “I am fifty-five, fond of walking and reading, and do not drink nor smoko. I will live anywhere except London or Manchester. I have not much money, as I have used it on tho education of my boys, and though I have been left £2OO a year by my mother-in-law I lose that if I marry.” Here is an extract from the letter of a widow in the south of England, fifty years old, who has two sons, both of whom may shortly be leaving home: “ I dread the .empty house and tho loneliness, ns 1 am rather a socjablo person. If 1 could find a suitable man I would like to marry again.” A northern woman of seventy-four makes a pitiful plea. She says: “1 am tall, considered fairly good looking, and as often judged to bo only sixty. I should appreciate a quiet man.” These are only a few appeals picked at random from the bundle.
