LOCAL AND GENERAL

It is reported that a crack has developed in the Tarewa Hill, which ;s on the main road between Wairoa and Gisborne (says a Press Association message). There is no immediate danger, but it is liable to be dangerous later, especially if heavy rain sets in. This portion of the load is precarious at the best of times, and the year before last there was a fifteen-acre slip, when the road was blocked for some time. A Duller resident who has just returned to Westport from tho Maruia mineral springs give a glowing account of their curative properties. He, himself, suffered from rheumatism, but has got rid of the complaint. While he was there (says a Press Association telegrume) a woman suffering from rheu matism came to see what benefit she could derive, and sho not only got rid of rheumatism, hut also of a goitre. When sho was there 200 people came tc tho springs, but there is no attendant. There arc six baths for men and iivo for women, but as there is no notice outside to distinguish one from the other, embarrassing situations sometimes arise. Tho Buller resident urges that an attendant should be placed in charge of the baths to see that they are kept clean, and also with powers to protect bird life in the vicinity of the springs. Many youths, ho states go there with pea, rifles and destroy the native birds and the beautiful New Zealand parrots, which are now very rare. Protection oi the hush there, which is destroyed by campers, is also urged, as it,adds to the attractiveness of the surroundings and also affords shelter for campers.
