RELIC OF EARLY MAORIS

BOUNDARY POLE UNCOVERED PLACED IK LAKE 200 YEARS AGO [Pek United Pkess Association.] WELLINGTON, January 7. A totara pole placed in the bed or Poukawa Lake, Hawke’s Bay, by a noted Maori chief oyer 200 years ago, which possesses considerable historical importance, has been uncovered during the lowering of the water level by, the Lands Dpartmeut. The pole, which was firmly embedded in the lake bottom, is reputed to have been placed in position by one of two rival chiefs as a line of demarcation for the tribal fishing rights. It is in a good state of preservation, and is situated about twenty chains from the old outlet. Around its presence centres the story of a dispute between chiefs whose deeds have been banded down through successive generations. The pole is about 4in in diameter, its surface being water-worn and its outside encrusted with limestone deposit. Further investigations will bo made when the lake is drained to a lower level. The Hon E. A. Ransom indicated that if the pole appears to be identical with that placed in the lake by one or the Maori chiefs, the Lands DepartBlent would make suitable arrange* ments foi its protection, to prevent it being removed or damaged in any way.:
