RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION
■ CABINET CONSIDERING POSITION MODIFICATION OF PROGRAMME LIKELY [Pur United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, December 19. Railway construction problems, it is understood, have boon engaging the attention of Cabinet recently, and it is stated that there is a decided possibility of the programme which has boon laid down by tho Government for the next few years being modified considerably. It is reported that tho Government has been considering the cessation of activities on one cr two lines under construction, but official confirmation is not available. The Minister of Railways (Mr Veitch) loft last night on a flying visit to Christchurch in connection with railway matters, and he will return to Wellington to-morrow. ACTING PRIME MINISTER QUESTIONED. STATEMENT TO BE ISSUED SHORTLY. [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, December 19. According to an announcement made by the Acting-Prime Minister (Mr Ransom) this evening an official statement upon the Government’s intentions concerning tho future of railway construction will bo made in the next few days. Tho suggestion that tho Government had been considering tho cessation of activities on one or two lines under construction was referred to Mr Ransom, who said that although lie was not prepared to say anything at the moment a statement would be issued in tho near future..
