TRADE AND TARIFFS BUTTER AND MOTOR CAR IMPORTS [Special to th* ‘ Star.’] CHRISTCHURCH, December 17. According to Mr G. W. Skellerup, a Christchurch business man,- who has returned from a trip abroad which included Canada, the Canadian automobile manufacturers are still trying to arrive at a compromise with New Zealand regarding the tariff on Canadian motor cars, which are now placed on the foreign tariff, list', whereas before they enjoyed British This action was taken by the New Zealand Government in consequence of the Canadian Government increasing the duty on New Zealand butter to a minimum of 4 cents per lb. Mr Skellerup was in Canada while the Prime Minister (Mr Forbes) and Dr Craig (Comptroller of Customs) were trying to reach an agreement on the subject of the butter duties and the car duties with Mr Bennett (Prime Minister of Canada). No success attended the negotiations, and. there was still no success when the two Prime Ministers met in Britain at the linperial Conference. Mr Skellerup was in England at that time. The Canadian automobile manufacturers were concerned over the tariff on Canadian cars, for New Zealand was Canada’s best customer for motor cars and accessories. The Canadian manufacturers would be perfectly willing to accept a slight increase in the tariff, but not such a high one. as is at present imposed.
