The Hon. J. A. Hanan left for We!* lington this morning to attend a meeting in connection with the New Zealand University. Professor Lawson was a passenger for; Auckland by the through express today l)r Newlands left to-day for Wellington to attend a meeting of tho New. Zealand University, and will return-to Dunedin on Saturday. Dr Shaw, medical officer of health for, Southland, passed through this morning on his way to Wellington. Mr P. Barr, accompanied by liis son, Mr R. P. Barr, left this morning en route to Sydney. Miss Mary E. Steuhouso has been appointed to tho position of assistant.masseuse, including teaching duties, at the « Dunedin Hospital, the position being temporary during t..e absence of Miss Wilkin on leave from February 1 to November 30, 1931. The Mother Bertrand scholarship, awarded annually after a competitive examination, was won this year by Miss Veronica Goughian, a pupil of St. Dominic’s College, Dunedin. Staying at the Grand Hotel are Jit; R. J. Orboll (Auckland), Mr A. CGray (Wanganui), Messrs J. H. L* Moore, R. L. Fisher, and A. P. Keightloy (Christchurch), Mr D. L. Paterson (Oamaru), and Mr G. R. Pearce 'Geraldine), Mr A. Richards (Timaru), Messrs J. Mitchell and E.'Mee (Oamaru), Mr R. A. Smith (Tarras), Mr and Mrs Preston (Galloway), Mr and Mrs C. M'Kenzie (Balclutha), Mr and Mrs G. Nixon, Mr A. Price (Gore), and Mr F Kingsland (Invercargill). ■ Messrs E. Wright and A. Rout (Melbourne), Mr W. Harris (Wellington), Mrs H. Knight (Christchurch), Mr L. : Ha3’es (Hakataramea), Mr A. H. Chapman (Kurow), and Messrs E. R. : Stephens, J. J. Ward, J. S. Marshall, and C. S. Mackay (Invercargill) are among the visitors to the City Hotel. A Press Association message from London ■ states that Mr Frank Alwvu Taylor, a son of Mr Francis Colhugwood Taylor, of Auckland, was married to Miss Kathleen Byass, of Yorkshire. Mr Taylor is presently going to Clfrist Church, Oxford. ; ■ At the executive meeting of 'the Chamber of Commerce yesterday Mr A. C. Cameron (president) announced thali one of their members (Mr John Clarke) was that day celebrating ’his golden wedding, and he thought it would be fitting if the executive - forwarded the chamber’s heartiest congratulations and felicitations to Mr and Mrs Clarke This was unanimously agreed to, Mr Cameron mentioned that Mr John Clarke was one of the best types of fanner which this country had produced. He could truly be called one of Nature’s gentlemen. Mr Clarke is a past provincial president of the New Zealand Farmere. Union and a life member of the Provincial Executive and of the Dominion Executive. He is the “ father of the Fanners’ Mutual Insurance Association, and is the present chairman: of directors. He takes the keenest interest: in everything to do with the developr>'"'t of the province. He is an’ elder of First Church and a member of the Land Assessment Court. Mr and Mrs Clarke have two sons farming in , this province—Messrs William and Peter Clarke, of Wairuna, Clinton. Ona son (Jack) was superintendent of .the New Plymouth Hospital, and has-just taken his P.R.C.S. degree in London.There are three daughters—Miss Clarke (Bruce street, Roslyn), Mrs William M'Neur (wife of Rev. M‘Neur, Pleasant Point), and Mrs W. G. M'Gregor (St.Leonards). On behalf of the directors and staff of the Otago Farmers’ Union Mutual Fire Insurance Association’Mr A. C. Cameron (general manager) presented Mr and Airs Clarke with an oak bureau desk and crystal vase as a token of the esteem in which they are held.
