' ON THE SHELF. A certain small town had bought a new lire engine, and the chief, after gathering all his men together, suggested that an appropriate _ motto should he placed over the station. The thing was debated at some length and several suggestions were made. Finally ono man said: “I propose the following motto:— 1 May this fire engine he like all the old maids in our town—always ready but never called for.’ ”
