MANUFACTURERS AND CHINAMEN.
TO IHJB KIMTOK, Sir, —The manufacturers and oLliorx toll us it is wise men who buy locallymade articles, thereby keeping their money in tile country, thus preventing nnoniploynient. ami teiuling to make New /calami prosperous. It is the general belief that the money winch goes to foreign countries causes unemployment ami increases the depression. Yet wc find that several ol those manufacturers deal with Chinamen for Bieir fruit and vegetables, although it is common knowledge that practically all the money a Chinaman makes goes to China. In the North Island the hulk of the trade in fruit and vegetables is in the hands of Chinese, and such is rapidly becoming the position in the south, albeit whore British competition has been eliminated the prices are liiglKT than they have ever been. Ibis is a warning that each housekeeper would bo well advised to notice. I might suggest that at the next meeting of tlio Manufacturers’ Association the ones who really do have this country’s welfare at heart should counsel the erring ones to practise what they preach.— I am, etc., Trade Within the Kmiuhe. November ‘29.
