BOWLING NOTES

[By Measurer.]

The weather again seriously interfered with the interolub games last oaturday, so much, so that play had to be abandoned when halfway through. These fixtures may have to be completed at the end of the season; therefore the score cards should be preserved.

Rules 5 and 6 (governing interclub games): Where all the matches fixed for any day have not been completed •the Match Committee shall decide whether the incomplete matches shall be completed or that the whole fixtures shall be replayed. Matches to be completed and fixtures to bo replayed shall he postponed until the programme has been completed, and then played as fixed hy the Match Committee,

Entries for the Dominion Association tournament at Auckland in January -close on Saturday, December 6, so it is time the fees and particulars were on the way. A quartet from Balmacewen ' (Ferguson, Lambeth, Hindle, Buchan) is making the trip, playing m all events, and I believe two rinks from the Dunedin Club will also enter— Gregory, Best, Gardiner, Deare, and 'J. D. Smith, Hutchison, Higgmson, Rigby. These teams are not necessarily playing in the order given.

Bowlers are reminded that entries for the Dunedin Centre’s Christmas pairs tournament close on Monday, December ■l6. Players are guaranteed six games m the section play. Three games are to ■.- be played on Christmas Day, with a good interval_ for lunch, and three /games on Boxing Day. Section ties or section winners will be played on the of Boxing Day, and the finals on Saturday, December 27. Secretaries of clubs will no doubt be -fully wise to the fact that the capita'tion fees—both to the local centre and - the Dominion Bowling Association — must be paid at once in order to earn the rebate. The centre fee is 2s (re- - duced from ,2s 6d at the last annual meeting), arid the association fee is 6d.

' Dunedin Club sincerely mourns the : death of Mr W. H. Duke, a very old member. He was a capable lead, and f thoroughly enjoyed his games among his fellow-members, with whom he was most cheery and popular. - Local howlers are naturally expected :to patronise the Dunedin Centre’s pairs tourney at Christmas time, but to those - who annually make a jaunt into the •/. country at that time the tournament at •■Alexandra should appeal. Mr Hewitt •: has sent me a copy of the programme — . singles on Thursday, rinks on Friday, - ana pairs on Saturday—and entries .must reach him by December 20. If .-the entries necessitate it the Clyde green will also be used.

'-• Mr W. J. Thompson, of the Logan Park Club, reports that good progress is being made in the formation of the new greens. When finished there will be fully 6in of good soil surface, and it " is expected that Mr Tannopk will make ’a suitable sowing of proper bowling green grasses when the time comes.

At the Drill Hall carnival to-night the local lady bowlers, taking their share of duty among the sports bodies, are in charge of the sweets stall, and if enthusiasm and . preparation count for anything there should he quite a •fine array or enticing sweets.

- The ladies have, been more fortunate ■ than their brothers in. the matter of weather for their interclub games, the four games to date having been played but according to programme. The following are the results of Tuesday's fixtures:—Bay beat Kaituna, Mornington boat Green Island, Valley beat Roslyn, Leith beat Port, Dunedin beat Caversham, St. Kiida beat St. Clair. While - one or two of the games were runaway victories, that between Bay and Kai- ' tuna was a very close finish, being won only by the last bowd on an extra bead. The draw for next Tuesday is: Bay v. St. Kiida, at Bay; Otago v. Green Island, at Green Island; Port v. Morn■ington, at Port; Valley v. Caversham, at Caver-sham; Leith v. Kaituna, at Leith; St. Clair v. Dunedin, at St. Clair. '

A party of ladies from the Phmnlx Club (Oamaru) was to have come to town on Wednesday to play a team from the local clubs, but the weather ' kept them at home. Some bowlers seem to have the idea that by going on to the green on a Saturday afternoon they get all the practice that is necessary to turn themselves out as “ compleat ” bowlers. Izaak Walton’s “compleat angler” may only have gone fishing on Sunday mornings off the nearest wharf,, but he who would attain to the ranks of the elite in the bowling world must do something more than merely roll up once a week. In bowling, as in other

games, practice is necessary, even though it does not bring anything like 'perfection, and the good old daily afternoon or evening roll goes a long way in helping to make one efficient. Yet ' it is strange how some men are content to jog along in the ranks of the passably good or mediocre, although if they practised consistently they could not help hub become good players. , From what has been seen of the bowls on the greens this season, and taking this in conjunction with what happened last season, it is very evident that_ wooden bowls are coming back into" . favour. Lignum vitse is'not as plentiful to-day as it used to be. and unless the bowls arc first grade one is likely to find a bit of sap in them somewhere. For that reason it is perhaps better to get them polished in their natural colour, for I have seen several wooden howls black polished which have distinctly shown signs 'of sap when the polish has worn off. Possibly such a defect, if extensive, would also interfere, with the balance of the howls. There are still some bowlers .who prefer /the composition howls, as it is believed they are less affected by climatic conditions, but if wooden howls are properly oiled and pared for it is difficult to imagine that the weather would affect them very much. Quite a few bowlers have Sent to England for their new sets, and in two or three instances the reason given for this is that the price charged for new bowls in New Zealand is so much higher that the amount saved by importing direct is' considerable. Ib is not the first time this information has come to me (‘ Dominion ’), and it is somewhat surprising that the local sports depots do not try to meet the situation. THE TEN COMMANDMENTS OF SPORTSMANSHIP. “ Ampmub.”] 1, Thou shalt finish the game thou heginnest. 2. Thou shalt take losses without excuses. : 3. Thou shalt be humble m victory. 4. Thou shalt always play fair and abide by the rules. • 5. Thou shalt honour the referee or umpire. . 6. Thou shalt share the glory of winning with thy team mates. 7. Thou shalt be willing to give thine opponent every advantage thou askest. 8. Thou shalt play for the sake of the game and the joy of playing. 9. Thou shalt do team work unselfishly. 10. Honour the game thou playest, for he who playeth. straight and hard .wijsis gypa though fie Iflsea.
