EMBRYO CHAMPIONS

SCHOOLS' SWIMMING CARNIVAL THREE RECORDS BROKEN The interest taken in schools’ swimming was strikingly illustrated last night by the large crowd that thronged ‘the Municipal liatiis for tho annual swimming championships of the Otago State primary schools, and besides hundreds of youngsters who almost lifted the rafters by tho volume of their cheering there were many more adults present than usual. Although many of those swimmers whose names have figured fairly prominently at the schools’ carnivals during tho past two or three years have now left, another batch of youngsters have come forward to take their place, and if the general all-round standard was not quite what it has been in some past years it may be fairly stated that there were some really outstanding swimmers in action, and during the evening no fewer than three records were broken, with the possibility of the figures being improved _ still further when the finals are decided to-night. The entries were exceptionally large, showing that the importance of encouraging competitive swimming is fully recognised by the teachers, and tho spectators were treated to some splendidly contested races, some of the most exciting finishes being staged by youngsters who might well be termed novices at the sport. As usual, the relays attracted great interest, and it was in tho 133 l-Byds mixed relay under fourteen that the Normal School A team broke Albany Street’s two-years’ old record by returning Imin 46sec for tho distance. Tho efforts of the first-year swimmers in the Olds Cup relays were worthy of special mention, and without a doubt the Standard IV. teams’ events may be looked upon as one of the most important on the programme. Coming to tho individual swimmers it would be difficult to sort out all the promising performers from the heats, but S. Jarvis was one of the really outstanding boys. He has gradually come to the front since he made his first appearance at these carnivals as a tiny little chap a few years ago, and last night he lowered his brother Walter’s record for 2oyds (boys under twelve) from 16 3-ssec to 16sec. He did 22 4-ssec to win his heat in the 33 l-3yds under thirteen, and one of his closest opponents in the final should bo E. Simian, a swimmer who is capable of registering faster time than that credited to him in this event. Some promising exponents of breast stroke were in action, and J. Roydhouse won his heat of tho 60yds (boys under fourteen) in 44sec—2 2-ssec outside Buster Olds’s record, established in 1926.

It was unfortunate that Miss Nancy Olds (the Otago junior champion) was unable to compete in the girls’ division, but there were two or three competitors who showed out above the rest, their performances being particularly good. Miss 0. Rix won her heat of the 25yds (girls under thirteen) in the smart time of 17 3-ssec, which was 2 l-ssec better than the time put up by Miss M. Pockson last year. In their respective heats, Misses A. Gillies and R. Jarvis also bettered the existing record by covering the distance in 19 l-ssec and 19£sec respectively. Miss E. Morrison was another promising swimmer in the girls’ section, and won her heat of the 33 l-3yds under fourteen .in 26sec, which was - only - 2-Ssec outside the record.

During the evening Mr P. A. Mathioson, coach and custodian at the baths, gave one of his ever-popular exhibitions of trick and fancy swimming, which delighted the children. A display of plain and fancy diving was given by two ex-New Zealand champions in H. E. Walker and Mrs E. 0. Isaacs, both diving well. Walker was in particularly fine form, some of the dives he executed being very difficult, and showed bettor form than he has done for some seasons past. The management of the whole programme left nothing to be desired, the events being got off quickly. Special mention must be made of the efforts of the secretary of the Schools’ Swimming Committee (Mr J. M. Briggs), who had associated with him a most energetic band of officials, including members of the Otago Swimming Centre. Mr H. D. Morgan was a highly-effici-ent Press steward.
