' In; connection with the Loyal Baud of Friendship Lodge. (Kakanui) a minstrel troupo was formed some time ago, and the first public appearance took place on Labour Night - at the local Coronation Hall. The occasion, was one for the. raising of funds for improvements to the local soldiers’ memorial and the local library funds. As a result of the entertainment, which was largely attended, the funds will receive a substantial donation. Tho first part of the programme consisted of items by a concert party which had been organised by Mr Meldrum, of Oamaru, and most of the performers wero members of the Loyal Oamaru Lodge, Bro. Meldrum being always ready to give such assistance to his lodge or to any deserving object. The minstrel-troupe from the local lodge made a very creditable first appearance, the whole performance reflecting credit on tho organisers. The efforts of the corner men, particularly Bro. Reg, . Oates, and the witticisms of Bfo. W. 1 Barnett kept the fun going. A solo was rendered by Bro. M‘Donald, and the various choruses, both old-time and adaptations of modern songs, interspersed with many _ local allusioris, wero all well received. One of the-best concerts held locally concluded with an enjoyable dance, supper being-provided for all. There was a good attendance of officers and members at the monthly meeting: of the Loyal Tapanui Lodge held on Thursday last, the N.G., Bro. E. Howard, in the chair. A letter was received from the secretary of the Loyal Victoria Lodge asking the Tapanui Lodge to be represented' at tho anniversary celebrations,' One candidate was initiated. The balance-sheet of the recent annual ball was before the meeting and-showed tlia/fc the function had been a financial success, the surplus being placed to the credit of the social fund. It was decided to hold a degree meeting on November 13. In connection with the annual church parade the N.G. thanked members for . attending, there'being an excellent representation from the lodge. The Loyal Caversham Lodge. mot on Wednesday evening in the Oddfellows. Hall, Forbury Corner, Acting N.G. Bro. W. Mowatt presiding over a large attendance of members. Mourning was observed in memory of the late P.P.G.M., Bro. J. H. G. Briggs, who was closely associated with the lodge and district for many years. Several members made feeling to the loss the lodge had sustained by the passing of one who had given good service to tho order, the permanent secretary (Bro, R. D. Sonness) stating that the late' brother and members of his faihily all belonged to the order, and all y had done good work for. the cause. Tho late brother would be affectionately remembered in the lodge and district for many years. A motion of sympathy with the bereaved family was , then carried, members standing in silence for a few moments. A" number of business matters, including a, lengthy correspondence list, were dealt with, and three .propositions for membership were received. A discussion on entertaining tho members of the _ juvenile branch ensued, and it was decided to invite the boys to attend the next meeting -of tho adult lodge,, when .they would bo the guests of the parent lodge. _ It was decided to make~an : official visit to the Princess Mary Lodge on Tuesday next. A number of-visiting brethren from the Loyal Centenary, Albion, and Dunedin Lodges having acknowledged, the visitors’ toast, the lodge w.is adjourned, and a card evening was then held, tho winner being P.G. Bro. Hey. At the fortnightly meeting ..of tho Loyal Albion Lodge, held in the M.U. Hall, Stuart street, on Thursday evening, there was a very good muster of members,.' tho N.G., Bro. A. Landrebe presiding. A letter from the provincial secretary advised that a grant from tbo district, distress fund had been made to the widow of a deceased member. Some discussiou took place regarding a letter, from the secretary of tho Loyal United Juvenile Lodge asking for . tho appointment of four, members to tho Management Committee of that lodge. The lodge having established a juvenile branch of its own, the suggestion was made that it withdraw its active support from., the United Juvenile Lodge. ■ A motion to this, effect, however, was defeated, and the following were appointed to represent tho lodge:—N.G.Bro. A. Landrebe,. Bro. L. Huntley, G.M. Bro. C. Schmelz. and P.G. Bro. W. Longworth. A cordial welcome Was extended to tho oldest member of the lodge, P.G. Bro. J. Carrington, who had been laid aside for some time with sickness. P.G. Bro. G. Goughian reported on a visit to tho Loyal Upper Clutha (Pembroke) Lodge, stating that the new lodge was making good progress, members displaying enthusiasm by making long journeys to be present at the meetings. The matter of the official visit to the Loyal Princess Mary Lodge on Tuesday next was mentioned, the lodge deciding to Attend officially before closing the meeting The P.D.G.M., Bro. E. Longworth, referred sympathetically to the death of P.P.G.M. Bro. J. H. G. Briggs, of the Loyal Caversham Lodge, and it was decided to forward a letter of sympathy to the lodge. Visiting brethren were well represented at the meeting, the following lodges acknowledging -the toast.:—Centenary, Valley.

Caversham, Dunedin, and Hand . and Heart. During the evening one candidate was initiated and one member received by clearance. , . •
