CHARGE WITHDRAWN. The final stage of the Coleridge tragedy was reached this morning, when Arthur Edward Farquharson, aged fifty-nine, Colenso’s companion, appeared before the magistrate at Christchurch on a charge of being an idle and disorderly person. The charge was withdrawn by the police.—Press Association, “ WORDS.” TRAINER AND SPORTING WRITER. [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, November G. Daniel Gladstone M'Kendry, a horse trainer, had “words” with a sporting writer named Frederick George Hanlon at the Addington trotting grounds on October 14. As a result, M'Kendry was fined £2 and costs by the magistrate (Mr Mosley) to-day for using insulting language. Hanlon gave evidence that ho was sitting in the grand stand at Addington, when M'Kendry, who had been working two horses, came over and used filthy language. Witness gave no provocation. Ho denied that trainers sometimes resented -his presence. Defendant gave evidence that he went to see Hanlon in the stand about a horse at Methyen. Hanlon made a remark to witness, who replied: “ Surely I can come out to work a horse without you foliowing me round like a motherless foal.” Hanlon put his fingers in witness’s face, and that started the ball rolling. He did not use insulting language, , To the Sub-inspector, defendant admitted that ho had a grievance against Hanlon. IVitness did not object to what Hanlon reported in his papers, but to what he said outside his papers. The magistrate, in convicting M'Kendry, said language was sometimes used on training tracks that would not be tolerated in drawing rooms.
