BAPTIST UNION CONFERENCE
MORNING SESSION The annual conference of the New Zealand Baptist Union was carried a stage further in the Hanover Street Baptist Church this morning, when the president (Rev. W. E Lambert) occupied the chair. Mr W. Flett was introduced to conference ns a student for training in the Baptist College. MISSIONARIES. A cordial welcome was to the Misses Rice and Arnold, missionaries on furlough from East BengalMiss Rice spoke of the gigantic struggle in India, and asserted her belief in Christ as the hope of that troubled land. Miss Arnold asked for co-operation in the work, pleading for intercessory prayer. The work in India is not for the moment, but for generations to come. MISSIONARY SOCIETY. The adoption of the forty-fifth annual report of the New Zealand Baptist Missionary Society was moved by Miss M. Gainsford. She drew attention to the fact that Baptist missionaries were continuing their work undisturbed during troubled times. She intimated that applicants for training were coining forward, and the staff on the field was being maintained at full strength. She paid tribute +o the work, and character of Dr Amir Hossaih, who has served the society with rare .devotion for thirty years. The work of the B.W.M.U. in New Zealand Was remarked upo i as a vital intercessory factor in the success of the activity in India. . .. , The Rev. J. J. North said that the position of the society and the union was unique in that all .its accounts were in credit. He doubted if any other church assembly in the world could claim such an excellent record. Such a statement exemplified aw onderfur sacrificial spirit on the part of all members of the church. The Rev. J. Takle was appointed as preacher of the missionary sermon at the next conference, with the Rev. S. Jenkin as deputy. In accordance with his notice of motion, the Secretary (the Rev. Lnscelles) mo vcd-“ That to meet the present demands of retired missionaries, also further claims that may be made upon the society a pension fund be established, and that the sum of £2,000 he transferred from the emergency fund for the purpose of establishing such a fund.” After the matter had been discussed at length the following resolution was substituted and carried: —“ That a subcommittee be set up. consisting of the Revs. Archer and Rollings, and Messrs Toneycliffe, Gaze, and Ivory, to consider the question of the establishment of a pensions fund and also the matter of pensions and allowances to retiring missionaries. The election of members of the Missionary Committee resulted as follows: —Mr S. Barry, the Rev, J. Tags (Auckland auxiliary), Mrs C. Collins, the Rev. W. S. Rollings, the Rev. E N. Goring (central), the Rev. C.. W. Duncunib, the Rev. J' K. Archer (Canterbury), and the Rev. S. Jenkin (Otago). There are several ex-officio members to be added.
