Saturday’s Meetings

lengths off third, followed by Good Gift, Assemble, and Water Power.

Meadow Lark, Praise, and Greenaway were withdrawn from the Electric Handicap, and Compensation (£6494), with H. Gray up, was backed down to an odds-on price, and Charmaine (£3214), Waving Com (£3034), and Spoon (£241 J a ) were the best fancied of the others. The starter missed a good chance directly the horses lined up, and before they got into line again he placed both Red Boa- and Waving Corn in the “rogues’ pen.” Charmaine and Spoon were the smartest to find their legs, and Waving Corn the last. Spoon and Charmaine led Compensation and Red Boa along the back and up the hill, Rin Tin Tin dropping back last. Charmaine, on the rails, Spoon, and Red Boa on the outside turned into the straight on even terms, with the favourite on the rails, and 7 Waving Corn just in behind them. Opposite the grand stand Charmaine. Spoon, Red Boa,

DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB

rLEAH STAKES TO FAIR WEATHER FAVOURITES HAVE GOOD DAY The opening day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting, postponed from Thursday, was held on Saturday- afternoon, and, considering all the rain which had fallen from Monday night,' the. course was in a much better condition than moat , people expected. An excellent, sward of grass on the track prevented it from cutting up badly, and, though holding and slow, provided absolutely safe going. The chief drawback to the postponement was the frequent use of the scratching pen, and in the principal handicap the field was reduced? to four starters. The' attendance was moderate, the course gate receipts being about £155 less than on the Saturday of last spring meeting, which considering the. fine day was disappointing. But the chief decrease in receipts was in the totalisator turnover. Only £13,603 was handled, as against £20,914 on the Saturday last year and £16,554 on the Thursday. Mr MTvor’s starting was good, though he missed one or two chances of making prompt despatches through not having the electricrelease r in his hand when the horses lined up to the harrier at the first time of asking. Mr Ireland had some close finishes to decide, but his decisions were given promptly, and appeared to find favour with the? public. After about; three furlongs had been covered in the October - Handicap, Valdamo, who was in front, suddenly dropped back, and a few strides further on tell dead. His rider, J. T. Andrews, sustained a compound fracture of the left leg, just below the knee. • Concluding results in detail; —

NOTES ON THE EVENTS

[By Bx. Cj,ai».] In the Maungatua Handicap Dumblane, Royal Limond, Rosewpod, Moy Hall, and Ballance were withdrawn, and th© two Guineas candidates, Rin (£379)) and Gustavo (£307)). monopolised th© betting. Academy (£148)), Assemble (£IO6J), and Ball Dress (£100) being the best fancied of the others. When the barriertwas released Good Gift received a bump and lost several lengths. Gustavo and Water Power were the first to show out, and they led along the back from Traho and Impertinence. At the far turn Water Bower and Gustavo had opened up a big gap from Traho, and coming up the nill Gustavo was just in front or Water Power, and Riri, who was slow to get on to his feet, began to improve his position. Gustavo led into the straight from Water Power, Riri, Impertinence, Mid Ball Dress. Riri ran into second place at the distance, but was running very greenly, and had to be straightened up twice. He got to within half a length of Gustavo at the finish, but the latter was always going easily. Impertinence was six

Waving Corn, Compensation, and Rin Tin Tin were racing abreast, and in a* scramble the favourite appeared to get the wprst of it, hut masterly horsemanship extricated him, and in a stirring finish Compensation beat Waving Corn by a short head. Red Boa was three lengths further back third, and Charrnaine, Rin Tin Tin, and Spoon next. The withdrawal of Stafshodter, Black Mint. High Court, and Evening from the Mosgiel Handicap left only a field of four to go to the'post, and Circulation (£475) was made a slightly better favourite than Black Duke or Town Major, who wore evenly backed. Black Duke was taken to'the front from the barrier rise, and led Town Major out of the straight, whore the favourite went wide and covered a lot of extra ground. Black Duke continued on in charge, and at the six-furlong post the other three were running abreast about two lengths behind him. There was no change until about three furlongs from home, where Circulation dropped out, and Town Major followed Black Duke into the straight. At the distance Town Major ran up to Black Duke, and cpiicldy had the latter in trouble, beating him home by a good length. Royal Game was six lengths off third, and '.Circulation a similar distance away. The sectional times of the race were: —Two furlongs 28 l-ssec, three 42 3-ssec, four 55 l-ssec, fice 68 2-ssec, six Imin 22sec, and seven Imin 35 2-ssec. * « * * For the if'Loan Stakes, Chief Light, ■ Irish Chieftain, Ossinmn, and Enwood were withdrawn, leaving a field of thirteen good-looking two-year-olds, and the heavy wagering was between Songbox (£457), and Lochlaggan (£4365), the next fancied being Cricket Bat (£232), Flower (£2oss), Hula Belle (£157), and Fair Weather (£124). Amy Johnson was the slowest to find her feet, and Fair Weather and Songbox the smartest. This pair quickly established a good lead from Flying Amy and Grecian Prince, Lochlaggan being in the centre of the field. Fair Weather and Songbox led Grecian Prince, Hula Belle, and-Lochlaggan into the straight, then the favourite dropped out, and inside the distance post Fair Weather and Hula Belle were in charge. Emerson got a clear run on the rails with Lochlaggan, and challenged Fair Weather. With the former on the inside this pair ran right out and finished in the middle of the course, Fair Weather gaining a neck advantage. Hula Belle, who began badly, was half a length off third, and Grecian Prince a similar distance away fourth, then followed Songbox, Last March, Flower, and Pandowa. » * .» * Royal Game, Smithereens, and High Gear were withdrawn from the October Handicap, and On Top (£602), Rascal (£602), and Salmo Salar (£528) were the best backed. The latter lost several lengths at the start, Caterpillar and Rascal leading out from Valdamo, After going a furlong and a-half the latter went to the front and led Caterpillar and Rascal to the far turn, then fell, leaving Caterpillar in charge from Rascal and On Top. The latter moved up racing across the top, and led into the straight from Rascal and Caterpillar. At the distance post Rascal and On Top were together, but the latter failed over the last half furlong, and Rascal beat him homo by a length. Caterpillar was six lengths away third, and Some Rose a bad fourth.

A heavy shower fell prior to the concluding race, the Taioma Hack Han dicap, for which Jock o’ Hazeldoan, Solmar, and Winter Garden wore with drawn, and Master Anomaly (£6421 was made a good favourite, with A 1 Jolsou (£371), Rosewood (£251)), and Quinopal (£220)) the next host backed. From a good start Master Anomaly anri Rosewood were the first to show out, and Wig Wag slowest to begin. Master Anomaly led RoseiVood and A 1 J'olson round the far turn, then the latter ran up into second place, Quinopal being third. The favourite and Al Jolson drew right away from the others, and the former won very easily by a short length. Quinopal was eight lengths away third, followed by Sailing Home. Little Duchess, Wig Wag, and Captivate. This marked Hector Grays fourth winning ride during the afternoon.

PHAR LAP AGAIN WINS EASILY SYDNEY, October 12. The Australian Jockey Club was unfortunate in striking dull and showery weather for the conclusion of the spring carnival at Randwick. The track was saturated and slightly holding. The attendance was poor. Hunt the Slipper, the stable mate of Movie Star, received strong support from its connections in the Canonbury Stakes, but, getting away from the barrier badly, never threatened danger. Gay Crest, running prominently throughout, proved too good for Paquito at the finish of the Waverley Handicap. _ . Nightmarch’s withdrawal from the Randwick Plate rendered Phar Lap’s task easier. After running at a slow pace throughout, the champion came home comfortably a winner by two lengths. • Nightmarch will appreciate the relief from the heartbreaking and futile effort to conquer a horse considerably his superior. . Hunting Cry registered the second victory on behalf of New Zealand in the day’s programme. He was never worse than fourth throughout, and came away in the straight to win with ease by four lengths.
