TWELVE "0” LOGOMOTIVEf ORDEREu r FIRST OF THEM FINISHED Constructive work at. the Hillside Railway Workshops is actives One of the orders is for the building of twelve new locomotives of the “C” class for shunting work, to - replace! the “F ■” class locomotives, now obsolete. The first of the dozen- is now completed and tested—as a matter of fact, it has drawn’ a trainband’ it is to bo iii regular service in a;- few- days. It has a handsome • appearance, and its design embraces some of j the most modern; features in locomotive construction. - ■’ These “ C ” locomotives are'of the 2—6—2 type, with two cylinders, to which, superheated steam is distributed by piston valves actuated by Walschert’s valve gear. Ample boiler and firebox proportions are provided. The boiler barrel has an outside diameter of 4ft 3in, its length being 20ft. it contains twelve superheater flue • tubes 54m diameter outside, and seventy-nine fire tubes If in diameter outside. The firebox is of a round-topped type, arid has a grate area of twenty-four square feet. A tumbler . grate' is fitlbd, and the ashpan is of the Hopper type, with, bottom cleaning doors. Feed is supplied to boiler by a top feed, service, and two Ross (pop 'safety valves are fitted. The principal dimensions are as follow : Gauge of rails, 3ft Gin. ' : > Cylinders (2) ; Ki n -. Wheels coupled ; diameter, 3ft 9in. Cvlinders piston stroke;'-22in. Wheels—leading bogie, diameter 2ft 6)in. v ‘ ; Wheels—trailing bogie, diametei 2ft 6Jin. Wheel base —engine 23ft 9in. Wheel base—tender 14ft, 6in. Wheel base—total ;45ft 9im. Boiler heating surface. Tubes and flues, 631 square feet. Firebox, 93 square feet. * Total, 724 square feet; Elements, 138 square feet. Grate area, 24 square feet,' Working pressure, 1801 b per square inch. Tank capacity, 2,000 gallons. Ratio—adhesive weiglit.V -58,0161 b, • tractive force 13,7881 b. The equipment- of the locomotive includes the following fittings M.L.S. superheater, with thre< balanced valves in Header foi regulator. Air sand to front and rear wheels. Sellars No. 7 injectors, delivering through top feed check valves. Detroit lubricator to cylinders. Franklin grease lubrication. Grease lubrication . and. special bronze bearings for coupling and connecting rods. Pyle national electric .front and rear headlights and cab lights. Generally this locomotive _ represents a skilful and interesting piece of designing work, a feature being the general accessibility) of all parts.
