Tlio famous underground rooms and corridors at Welbeck Abbey, which the Duke of Portland, has thrown open to tho public on stated occasions, are among the chief architectural curiosities of Great Britain. They include a huge ballroom 100 ft long, without a single supporting pillar. They were built by the eccentric fifth duke, who spent a handsome fortune in having the necessary ground excavated. It was the same duke who, when in London, was popularly supposed to _ load a double life, masquerading during the day as Mr Druce, a Baker street tradesman.
