TOWN HAIL ORGAN

Dr Galway presented an attractive programme at bis recital in. the Town Hall yesterday afternoon. The concert covered a comprehensive range of composition from many diversified schools, and delighted tho somewhat slender audience. The fact that most of the selections were unfamiliar did not affect appreciation, for Dr Galway; in each instance exemplified the musical value of tho work by thoughtful interpretations and skilful performances. His first group consisted of the charming ‘ Chaconne in P Major ’ by Purcell, the very graceful and spontaneous ‘ Fountain Reverie ’ by Fletcher, and the powerful Willan ‘Epilogue.’ The first movement from the Borowski ‘Sonata in A Minor ‘ was a florid work invested with colour and character. The ‘ Berceuse ’ by Cesar Cui was handled with delicacy, and admirably sot off Moussorgsky’s brilliant ‘ Kioff Processional,’ which was accorded a vivid interpretation. Tho ‘ Avc Maria ’ from Humperdinck’s ‘ Miracle ’ and tho Guihnant paraphrase of Handel’s ‘ See the Conquering Hero Comes ’ wore other selections played with effect. Associated with Dr Galway on this occasion was Madame Annette Chapman, a very accomplished mezzo. Madame Chapman's debut in Dunedin was attended with conspicuous success, and there is not the slightest doubt that she will be a distinct acquisition to tho musical circles of the city. Her songs were ‘II Mio Bel Foco ’ (Benedetto Marcello), the motette ‘ Alleluia ’ from Mozart’s ‘ Exultate,’ and the Brabm’s ‘ Von Ewiger Liebc.’ Madame Chapman has a lovely quality very artistically produced, and a rare interpretative sense. Anv forthcoming performances by her will be looked forward to with tho greatest pleasure.
