SCOUT NOTES

[By Grey Wole.] Noxv that the warm weather is drawing near and tho days ai - e growing longer one’s thoughts turn once more to camp and trail. This is one of the finest and most enjoyable sides of Scouting, and 1 hope that every Scout will do his utmost to make this the best camping season to date. Noxv is the time to start collecting and overhauling gear, if this has not already been done. And do not forget that tho more preparation you put into the mating of a camp the better and happier it will be, so start noxv.

Thirty-two attended the meeting of the Ist Dunedin (Roslyn) Troop on Friday. Patrol xvork xvas carried out, xvhile Air White examined six boys for their ambulance badge. Five passed. All those xvho already had the badge xvero re-examined, and all were successful in retaining their badges. During the evening Air Batchelor took a boxing class, and all those taking part had some good training. Air Lilly visited tho troop during the evening. A court of honour was held later. _ On Saturday afternoon several boys did some cooking in preparation for their cook’s badge. Tho 2nd Dunedin (Moruington) Troop entertained the boys of the Anglican Homo instead of holding the usual parade. In the afternoon a Soccer match xvas played, the visitors winning by 4 goals to 0. For the winning team Ryan, Craib, and Reid played well, xvhile Cope, APAlillan (2), and Smith all did well for the home team. _ After tho game the boys xvere entertained at tea in the Scout hall, and later a very enjoyable evening xvas spent, items being gix-ea by the visitors, troop, and pack. After Air Gerrard had thanked the bOys and committee for their kindness the evening was bx'ought to a close xvith the singing of ‘ Auld ’.Lang Syne.’ The Ocean Beach Troop paraded at headquarters on Friday night instead of Saturday, as the hall was occupied by the committee. Air Hanson taught the ambulance patrol (the Aloreporks) first aid. The Scouter instructed a number of boys in first class xvork. The remainder carried on with patrol work. The positions of tho patrols for the month xvere then announced and the rolls marked.

Tho 7th Anderson’s Bay Ti’oop met on Friday, txvehty-four boys answering the roll call. During the evening several boys completed their second class test by passing the ambulance examination. Another portion of the troop passed Scout pace, whilst the senior boys practised rope spinning under the able instruction of the Assistant Scoutmaster. The troop listened to an interesting address by the Scoutmaster. It xvas about boats, and to demonstrate he had an electric xvorking model which xvas brought along by one of the senior boys. Applications xvere received from those boys' .who wished to--■sib"for lb ?■ examination for px-oficienCy, badges; The boys are eagerly awaiting the night for the annual “ bun fight.” The Cavcrsham Troop paraded on Friday evening,' the time being spent _ in ax-ranging patrol corners and making articles to sell for tho troop funds. The troop is anxious to", play cricket with any other troop in the district, all communications regarding same to be addressed to Air S. Cummings, 66-Playfair street, Caversham. The xveekly parade of the St. Clair Troop xvas held on Friday night at the Presbyterian Church Hail. After rollcall and inspection Dr Carswell spoke to the troop on ambulance. Then a number of pieces of new_ rope xvere given to each patrol to xvhip the ends. Afr Falck referred to tho annual concert, and requested all to sell as many tickets as possible. To facilitate this he divided the distx-ict into a number of sections.

Tho North Dunedin Pack held a successful pax-ade on Friday last in the Geox-go Street School Hall. Subs, were collected, after xvhielx inspection was held, there being quite a good turnout. This was folloxvcd with a game of tunnell ball, after xvlxich star work xvas carried out under tho sixers. After a fexv games tho canoe Ixaka was run through, folloxved by star instruction and proficiency badges, under the Cubmasters. H. Gould, K. Sarginson, and B. Harxvood xvere successful in gaining their first star. The xveekly story xvas then told by the Cubber, and the pack xvas dismissed. The pack was visited by Assistant Commissioner Martin, and also several parents. On Saturday afternoon a large number of the pack spent a most enjoyable time at llov’s Gully, xvhere games xvere played. The Ocean Beach Pack paraded last night, part of tho time being taken up xvith games. This xvas followed by badge xvork, and after a nexv member had been enrolled tho pack was dismissed. The Bth Dunedin • (Woodhaxigh) Troop met last night, xvith a good muster of lads. After inspection subs, xvere collected. Some Scouting games, under the stars, were played. A meeting of the Troop and Pack Committee xvas held during tho parade. On Wednesdav night the' patrol leaders and officers held a meeting at Scouter Clarke’s place, xvhon matters regarding the progress of patrols, competitions, and minor matters were gone into. The Bth Dunedin (Woodhaugh) Cub Pack met on Friday night, xvith another full attendance. The parade started xvith inspection, the grand howl, tho club promise, and pack yell. Tho work for the night was knoltving, signalling, and a talk on health and cleanliness. A game of “ sentries and a talk by “Akela” ended the 'evening.
