READERS’ INQUIRIES
A GOOD WHITEWASH “Amateur ” inquires for a good whitewash for outside purposes. The following is the recipe for the whitewash used by President Grant in white washing the historical building of “White House” in America, and the same preparation has been used by several readers of this page, who report excellent results:—Brilliant Whitewash: Half a bushel of unslackcd lime, slack with warm water; cover it during the process to keep in the steam • strain the liquid through a fine sieve or strainer; add a peck of salt previously dissolved in warm water; 3lb of ground n'co boiled to a tbin paste, stir in boiling hot; lb of Spanish whiting, and Hb of gluo which has been previously dissolved over a slow fire, and add five gallons of hot water to the mixture. Stir well, and let it stand for a few days; cover up hot from the dirt. It should bo put on hot. Ono pint of the mixture will cover ono square yard properly applied. Small brushes arc best. There is nothing to compare with it for inside and outside work, and it retains its brilliancy for many years. Colouring matter may be added in any shade—Spanish brown, yollow ochre, or common day, oto.
