GOOD TEMPLARY

Chief Templar Sister Ellen Wood presided over a largo attendance of members and visitors at the weekly meeting on Friday of the Sunshine Junior Lodge. No. 4, held in the Church of Christ Sunday School, Eillcul street. Quo candidate was initiated, and one member applied for the degree of the silver seal. .Favourable comment was made by the D.S.J.W., Bro. J. Hilton, on the work of the officers in thenvarious duties. Greetings were received from Rescue Lodge, No. 105, and Conquest Juvenile Temple (Sister Mrs Dickinson, P.D.V.T.), Hope of Caversham Lodge, No. 128, and Marmion Junior Lodge (Bro. Martin), Hope of Dunedin Lodge, No. 155, and Silver Star Juvenile Temple (Sister A. Stccdman), Star of Freedom Lodge, No. 5, and Star of Victory Juvenile Temple (Bro. S. Sell). After the routine business bad been disposed of tlio chief templar condhctod an interesting competition on ‘Birds,’ the announcement of the answers creating surprise and amusement to the competitors. The fortnightly meeting of the Star of Freedom Lodge, No. 5,_ was held in the Kaikorai Presbyterian Sunday School Hall on Monday night. The lodge was opened by P.C.T. Bro. A. Reynolds. After the business was transacted a social evening entitled “ Scotch Night” was hold, the following contributing items; —Mr Wiseman (Scotch songs), Bro. Cromarty (recitation), Bro. Pollock (violin solo), Bro. E. lies (song), Sister Paterson (Scotch stories), Sister Doris Miller (recitations), and Bro. J. Flett (Highland dances). Sister A. Paterson was in charge, and after supper she read some amusing Scotch stories. Lodge closed in due form.

The fortnightly meeting of tho Beacon Juvenile Temple was held on Saturday, 13th. C.T. Sister Myrtle Teller presided over a largo attendance of members, and another friend was welcomed into membership. Bro. Cromarty, supt., reported on the opening of the boys’ lodge, and gave an interesting address on ‘ Drink and Unemployment.’ A poem on the work of tho temple, written by Ch. Sister I. Farqnharson, was then read. This was a very commendable effort, and was much appreciated by the members. Items were also given by Sister J. Teller, Sister Mrs Teller, and Sister E. Storm, and a surprise packet was handed round. Sister E. Facer, who had just returned from a visit to Central Otago, gave a short account of her experiences. There was a fair attendance of members at tho usual meeting of the All Nations Lodge, No. 13, C.T. Sister Smillio presiding over the meeting. Bro. W. A. lies, G.C., reported on the opening of the temple at Abbotsford, and Bro. TV D. Campbell, D.D., on a visit to Waitati, where another effort is being made to revive the Pride of Waitati Lodge. It was felt that sufficient enthusiasm had now been created to ensure the successful functioning of tho lodge. Tim programme consisted of songs in Gaelic and English, recitations, humorous anecdotes, and short speeches. It was decided that the sisters be asked to provide the programme for the next meeting, and that the open night be held over till October J 6. There wps a very largo attendance of members and visitors at tho weekly meeting of the Hope of Caversham Lodge 'on Thursday last in the Baxter Hal), Marion street, when Sister Mrs Giles, C.T., presided. Two candidates wore initiated and welcomed in the order. Bro- Hilton reported on the opening of tho Conquest Juvenile Temple at Green Island, and also _cn the last meeting of the Marmion .Junior Lodge at Caversham. A very favourable report of tho Ever Hopeiul Juvenile Temple was given by Bro. Martin. Bro. Dickinson, D.C.T., spoke a few words, stating bow pleased ho was to see so many new members who bad been initiated during tho quarter. After the business had been gone through the lodge was declared open, Sister Mrs Pauli, J.D., being in charge. A very enjoyable evening was spent in games, and a number of items were rendered, which were appreciated by all.

That interest in the work of the juvenile branch of tho Good Templar Order is increasing was clearly shown by the large attendance of juveniles and adult members ’present "at the meeting of the Ever Hopeful Temple, which was held on Monday evening in tho Caversham School Gymnasium, when Sister Marjory Lockhart, chief templar, presided, Superintendent Sister Mrs Giles being in charge. Two candidates were initiated and welcomed into the order. In addition to several prominent members of the order present was the grand chief templar, who spoko a few words of congratulation and encouragement to the children. The evening’s entertainment, which consisted of word building and reading Competitions, proved to be very enjoyable and educative, the successful competitors being rewarded with some pleasing gifts. A number of juveniles under the capable direction of Sister Mrs M. Pauli practised for tho forthcoming concert. A veto of thanks to tho entertainers and visitors brought a pleasant evening to a close.

A unique juvenile entertainment was held under the auspices of the Silver Star Juvenile Temple, No. 9, 1.0.G.T., in the old St. John Ambulance Rooms, Octagon. There was a largo attendance of juveniles and adults. Tho C.T., Bro. Clarence South, of the Hope of Dunedin adult lodge, opened the meeting, and extended a hearty welcome to the visitors, it being juveniles’ night. Ho then handed the meeting over to tlio Superintendent, Sister South, sen., who pointed out that the object of the. meeting was to gain members for the temple. The programme was thou proceeded with, the following juveniles taking part:—Pianol'oro solos, Sister Ella Patterson, Bro. J. Moodio; solos, Sisters Miki Parata. M. Raynor, and Bro. Jack South ; recitations. Sisters Betty Stroncle, Miki Parata, Clare Bazin, Edna Harper, Cora Harper, Frances Anthony, and Bros, J. Denny, C Powell, and J. .Moodio; duet, Sisters Mavis Raynor and Freda Robinson; sextet by six juvenile sisters; doll dance by four members and tiny tots; dance by eight of tho youngest members; whistling solo, Sister M. Raynor; novelty item by five brothers; two dialogues. ‘ Tho Temperance Lesson ’ and ‘ The- Now Curate,’ by Bros. Rackley and Ivor Powell and Sisters Racklev, Robinson, Bazin, and Raynor, and 0. Alston. Sister Anthony and Bro. Jones proposed a vote of thanks to the performers, pianist, the assistant superintendent, Sister Mrs Raynor, and Sister C. South, jun., for their work in arranging the programme. A special vote was accorded tlio assistant superintendent, Sister Mrs Raynor.
