OTAGO TRAMPING CLUB

ANNUAL REPORT The annual report of the committee of tho above dub states: — ft is now seven years since the club was formed, and the committee records with much pleasure the fact that tho enthusiasm of members shows no sign of decreasing. During tho past year all the wellknown spots around Dunedin have been revisited, and trips have also been made to the Waipori Power Station, Taien Moutli (via Wnihola), Hindon and Deo Stream, Mount Watkin, Matanaka, Pukctapu, and Trotter’s Gorge. The annual picnic at Pipikaretu Beach was attended by sixty members and friends, and we were again favoured with a perfect clay. Great interest is being shown in tho Saturday afternoon walks, which arc under the capable leadership' of Miss A. F. Edmond, who deserves special thanks for her efforts to make this part of our programme so successful. During Labour Day week-end one party repeated tho Palmerstou-Dun-baek-Hampdcn-Palmerston trip, while another party, under the guidance of Air R. Gilkison, spent a most enjoyable week-end at Bendoran. Thirty members look part in tho Club’s Christmas trip to tho Fox Glacier. Although the weather was unsettled, the party had a thoroughly enjoyable holiday. The day on tho Fox Glacier in itself made tho trip worth while, and the hospitality of Messrs Sullivan Bros, was appreciated by all Other walks were to Lake Matheson and Gillespie’s Beach Mpst the party spent a few days at the Franz Josef Glacier on their return journey, while one lady returned via the Copland Pass.

Other parties were out during Christmas and Now Year, and some of these visited tho ITowden and Routeburn districts, while later in the summer Miss D. Mackic and Mr G. C. Arras made some successful climbs in the Franz Josef region. , Tho Easter week-end trip was to Xaseby. Ten members took part, and found "it a most successful trip. Included in tho walks were visits to Mount Ida and to tho Dansey Pass. Dining the year the New Zealand Alpine Club appealed for assistance in building a hub on tho Tasman Glacier, near where the accident occurred last summer. This hut is to be called the “ Blomfield Memorial_ Hut.” The Committee felt that this was an object worthy of support, and accordingly made a. donation to the building fund. The official trip for next Christinas is to Kinloch. Details of the proposed arrangements are obtainable from the secretary. Kinloch makes a splendid base for a tramping holiday, and it is hoped that a large party will bo made up, ■ Thanks are again due to the many persons who permit members to cross their properties. These include Mr D. M‘Quilkan, of Wharo Flat; Messrs Gilmore Bros., of Evansdale; Mr A. A. Jnpp, of Mount Allan: and a great number of others in different parts of tho country.

The committee again desires to emphasise the need for the greatest possible care when crossing private or Corporation property, and to request the do-operatiou of all members and others in the preservation of native birds and bush. Thoughtlessness on the part of one or two might deprive rnanjifothers of privileges now enjoyed. TlioZglub’s photograph album is now bciflgtkcpt bv Miss If. Park. Members to hand copies of any intetjssting snaps dealing with tho Club’s . arfemgs to Miss Park or to the ’Opcretary, and so help to keep a record tho club’s activities.
