MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING Tbo monthly meeting of the University Council, held yesterday, was attended bv the Vice-chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell). Messrs J. W. Dove, C. M.-.Gilrny, J. S. Douglas, J. Rciiuie, J. S. Moore, G. R. Ritchie, J. W. Thompson, L. D. Ritchie, J. C. Stephens, J. Wallace, Professor Inghs, Dr W. Marshall Macdonald, Dr James Fitzgerald, and Sir Lindo Ferguson. The Director-General of F.ducation intimated that tho Governor-General had reappointed Mr G. R. Ritchie to tho council. PROFESSOR’S SUPERANNUATION. Tho Minister of Education wrote stating that the superannuation question had been recognised as unsatisfactory. Ho regretted that nothing could be done immediately, but a special committee had been set up to investigate tho position in an attempt to *’emove tho anomalies, and disabilities under which professors were; working. Tho Vice-chancellor said they had not got very far, but the council would notice the assurance in tho final sentence. , , , It was decided to send a copy ot tno letter to the Professorial Board. MINING SCHOOL. Tho Acting Prime Minister .wrote stating that the council’s application for an increased grant for the Mining School had been noted for further consideration in 1931. Mr Stephens said ho thought they should note the letter for further pressure. It was decided to renew tho application next year. RESIGNATION. Mrs M. C. Allan wrote submitting her resignation as tutor-organiser of the homo science extension ’ service, to take effect from January 31, 1931. STUDENT DEMONSTRATORS. The appointment of the following student demonstrators for the winter term was approved by the council: — Clinical medicine, A. L. Shcild and A. MTlroy; pathology, K. I. Nissen and E. W. Gibbs; VT)., F. F. Sligo. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance ' Committee reported having considered the position of Dr Galway in relation to superannuation, and resolved to recommend that an agreement be prepared with Dr Galway, such agreement to be subject to termination by three calendar months’ written notice on either side, and that the department be then informed that Dr Galway had been placed on the permanent staff as from September 1 last Following a, report by the chairman of the Finance Committee (Mr Ritchie), the council decided to approve of the appointment of a temporary assistant for Dr Bonham for a period of twelve months from the beginning of 1931 at a salary of £l5O. METHOD OF EXAMINATION. A special committee appointed to consider a letter from the University of New Zealand asking for the views of tho council on a recommendation of the Academic Board that the examination for B.A. and B.Sc. I. bo of the external-internal type reported that it had also had before it a letter from the Professorial Board setting out the reasons why the board supported tho proposed alteration. The following resolution was carried:—“The committee has considered the report on the scheme prepared by tho Arts and Science Faculty, and submitted to tho Professorial Board and approved by the board. In view of that report, this committee recommends the council to approve generally of tho scheme. It is noted: (1) That it applies only to stage 1; (2) that tho Professorial Board recommends that acceptance of tho scheme by the University teachers in any subject shall, for the present, lie optional.” CONFERENCE OF COLLEG ES.

Sir James Allen, Mr W. J. Morrell, Mr L. D. Ritchie, and the registrar were appointed to represent the council at a conference of colleges to bo held in Wellington on Thursday, September 25.
