ADMIRAL TO THE RESCUE

DROWNING CHILD SAVED PORTSMOUTH, August 27. Rear-admiral H. P. Vming,_ of Sonthsea, has at the age of sixty-eight, gallantly rescued a drowning child. The admiral was walking along the front near Sonthsea Castle, when he was told that two children had fallen into the water and that one, a girl, was drowning. Seeing the child floating face downward in the water, Admiral Vining at once threw off his coat, jumped in, and swam out to her. An onlooker threw a lifebuoy, which the admiral grasped, and by this means ho and the child he was supporting were pulled to the shore. Difficulty was experienced in getting the two up the sloping face of the sea wall, and the admiral was so exhausted by his efforts that he had to take to his bed. The girl was brought round.
