TRAVELLERS’ BIG DAY

READY RESPONSE INDICATED STREET COLLECTION ARRANGED In spite of the departmental setback which, with an interpretation of the Gaming Act at issue, resulted in the Dunedin commercial travellers abandoning their annual fund raising “Big Day” an even more comprehensive effort on behalf of charity is to be made this year. With infectious enthusiasm for a a good cause the army of benefactors, drawn from the Commercial'' Travellers! and Warehousemen’s Association, is throwing itself into the big Cash ; and clothes drive campaign organised for Saturday morning, and arrangements for “ the day” arc practically complete. , 1 .. An energetic member of the association has been gathering in recruits from the schools, the .idea being to secure a large number of the older boys, whose job it will be to join the Boy Scouts in assisting the sector captains and their lieutenants in gathering in the citizens’ offerings. The response so far has been generous, but in covering the whole of .the city and suburbs in the; short . period of four hours so much work is involved that the number of helpers could well be legion. There is yet time for schools to give still more assistance. Already parcels of food and clothing are being sent into the; Commercial Travellers’ Club by people who state that they will not be at home on Saturday, and in some cases folks who expect to be out of town have rung the organiser informing him that, the articles they are giving. will be left with neighbours. Subscriptions have also been forwarded. Altogether, there are indications that public response to the travellers’ appeal will be forthcoming on a very open-handed scale. It is hardly necessary to publish a reminder that any gifts will be welcome—clothing for adults and children, foodstuffs for everybody, and articles of general household utility. The generalissimo who ,sits in . state at the Bond street headquarters . wishes all helpers to be punctual in commencing duty on Saturday morning, the block officers _ and their staffs to go straight to their assigned locations. th conjunction with the big drive a street collection will be taken, thirtytwo ladies having kindly resolved to devote the morning to duty with the boxes.
