YOUNG MEN IN TROUBLE ARTICLES TAKER FROM CAB “Tho trouble seems to bo that they have an old car and are really unable to afford it,” stated Chief-detective Cameron in tho Police Court this morning, when Andrew James Johnson MacInnes and Leslie John Roberts ap peared voluntarily in answer to a charge of stealing, at St. Leonards, on September 3, a rug, a battery, a grease gun, a foot pump, a pair of pliers, and two lamp bulbs (total vMue £11), the property of Harry Arthiu Reynolds Pryde. . In outlining the case against the accused, Mr Cameron said that the complainant parked his car by the side of the road near St. Leonards, and during the time he was at a certain house the property mentioned in the charge was removed from his car. As the result of subsequent inquiries it was ascertained that these two young men had been visiting St. Leonards, and that they had been seen in that neighbourhood in an > Id car belonging to Maclnnes. The property had since ,heen recovered. Both men had been before the court before, Roberts for taking an article frdm a car _ at St. Clair and Maclnnes for receiving property stolen from a motor cycle. The trouble seemed to be that they had an old car, and were really unable to afford it. They had appeared voluntarily, and were not bad young fellows. Mr Cameron suggested that, if His Worship considered it was a case for leniency, a condition should be that they were not to have a motor car or a motor cycle. „ „ _ , The Magistrate (Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) remanded the accused till Wednesday, pending a report from ohe probation officer. He stated that, as they had appeared voluntarily, they would bo released.
