ST. CLAIR SCHOOL COMMITTEE
The monthly meeting of the St. Clair School Committee was held on Tuesday evening, when there were present the Chairman (Mr Pastier), .Messrs Calvert, Priest, Pritchard, Warwick, and Rhodes. Mr Calvert and Mr Pastier visited the school,_ and Mr Calvert reported that on this, his first occasion, ne personally was very interested in the working of the school, and found the attendance good, and also the grounds. In his opinion it would be a good education for parents to call at the school and see the classes during '■ working hours. Mr Pastier also reported that the school was scrupulously clean, and reflected credit on the janitress. Ho would like to see-the vegetable garden again being worked, and,in conjunction with Mr Coutts thought it advisable that a low fence should bo erected, the secretary being asked to write to Mr Joel for a price for a new fence. There were a few rails missing of the rustic fence, but this is being attended to. The fence on the Albert street frontage had not yet been completed. Mr Coutts was authorised to purchase a cricket bat. The Head Master reported that the average roll for August was 612, and the average attendance 570. Por the second terra the average roll was 614, and the average attendance 550. Miss Preston had returned to her duties after her period of leave. The football competitions had been closed, and the A grade competition had been won by St. Clair. Five members from the school team were chosen for the representative match against Southland. The school had been disinfected thoroughly during the vacation. The secretary was asked to write to Mrs Collier thanking her for throe framed historical pictures which she had donated; also to Mr Graham for two large triangles for the infants’ percussion band (the head master would be very pleased to receive any tambourines and an old drum, if any friend of the school has any that he has no further use for, for the same band) ; also to Mr Fletcher for his kindness in overhauling the electrical fittings of the balopticon. The secretary was also asked to write and thank the Otago State Primary Schools’ Sports Association for an order to the school for sports material. It was decided that the head master purchase a new Gestetner duplicator, handing in tho old “Reneo,” plus £2 in settlement, also that ho purchase the mathematical signs for the . typewriter which are necessary. The Chairman stated that tho committee felt very grateful to tho head master and staff for tho way the sports had been conducted, and asked the head master to congratulate the, boys on behalf of tho committee. Ho also stated that he would like to see something more done in the way of showing the appreciation of the committee. The inspector’s report was most encouraging, and tho Chairman congratulated Mr Coutts and the staff oil the excellent result obtained in all branches of the school. It was most gratifying indeed to_ have a report such as * had been received. It was decided to hold a sale of work on Friday, September 26, in order to raise funds for prizes and other necessities.
