POMP AND GRANDEUR
NEW PEKING GOVERNMENT INAUGURATION CEREMONY press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. 1 SHANGHAI, September 9. The newly-created independent Peking Government was formally inaugurated under the leadership of General Yen Su-shan, the central figure m the anti-Nanking rebellion. Pomp and grandeur marked the ceremonies, which were attended by hundreds of Peking s most prominent Chinese and foreigners. Marshal Chang Hsueh-liang, the Manchurian dictator, is reported to have declined a post with the Government, although he is maintaining neutrality. A public holiday was proclaimed in territory which is controlled by the northern coalition. Nanking’s military efforts to regain control in North China have been utterly unsuccessful, and the positions of both armies are practically unchanged.
