‘ COHENS AND KELLYS 1 ON FRIDAY George Sidney, Charlie Murray. Vera Gordon, and Kate Price are together again in ‘ The Coliens and Keiiys 111 Scotland,’ the latest of Universal’s uproarious “Cohen and Kelly ” series, which will commence at the Empire theatre on Friday. All a re, seasoned actors of stage and; screen, “Singularly gitted for comedy portrayals. They work together like clockwork. As for tho story, suffice to say that the Cohens and Kellys, unknown to each other, start out for Scotland with the idea of making a fortune from tho natives. They find that they were exceedingly over-optimistic in their intentions. The picture is studded with hilarious incidents. For instance, the ineffectual attempts of Cohen and Kelly to play golf, their antics when they bet on the horse'races, and Cohen trying to talk Scotch, all are extremely comical. Much of the credit for the success of tho picture must bo given to William James Craft for his direction. Known as ono of the foremost comedy directors in films, he had already shown his mottle in the “ Cohens and Kellys ” series by his direction of ‘ The Cohens end Kellys in Atlantic City. 1 ‘ALL QUIET . . .’ FILM. A pageant of terrible splendour . . a drama of deep human emotions ... a terrific indictment of modern war . . . that is ‘All Quiet cm the Western Front,’ Universal’s superb super-production of Erich Maria Remarque’s famous war book, coming to the Empire shortly. ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ is a magnificent picturisation of tho fate of youth in war. Its hero, young Paul Baumer, is a German, but ho stands for the youth of all nations subjected to tho most terrible of all human experiences. The picture portrays tho effects of war upon young Baumer and hjs companions. It is the poignant story of’youth that has been denied its chaiico at life ... of youth

hurled into a ceaseless hell of body and soul before it lias begun to live. Them are many scenes which will remain permanently etched upon tho memory of tho beholder . . . scenes terrific in their tragedy . . . scenes sublime in their heroism . . . scenes touch-

ing in their simple pathos. And always in the background is the tremendous panorama or the world’s greatest conflict. Lewis Ayres, in the central role, Louis Wolheim and John Wray give performances that have never been surpassed on the motion picture screen. Others in the large cast who stand prominently forth are Slim Summerville, Russell Gleason, W. Bakcwell, Scott Ivolk, Walter . Browne Rogers, Hon Alexander, Owen Davis, jun., and Zazu Pitts. Lewis Milestone has done a magnificent work as director. The broad sweep of. war is never allowed to obscure the human beings whose fate is the foremost consideration in tho picture.
