The new Government _ lighthouse steamer Matai, which is being brought out under Captain Manning to replace the Tutanekni, is expected to reach the Panama Canal to-day. Cabled advice has been received that she loft St. Thomas, in the West Indies, on Saturday, and the distance from St. Thomas to Colon is just over 1,000 miles. It is thought that the Matai called at St. Thomas to shelter from the tornado which wrecked Santo Domingo, ■ which is situated to the north. The Matai will replenish her fuel oil bunkers at Panama,-and will also take on board oil in barrels to provide sufficient to see out the long trip across the Pacific. The Matai is expected to arrive at Wellington about the middle of next month. Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure, first aid for coughs, colds, influenza. —[Advt.]
