DEPUTATION TO COUNCIL.
TO TII» EDITOR. Sir, —Your newspaper account of the above clearly discloses the adverse attitude of His' Worship the Mayor to the proposals of the deputation, and that any reforms brought about by _ the city councillors will have to be achieved without Mr Black’s help. I am completely puzzled in this matter, as at a recent meeting of women held in the Town Hall Mr Black spoke strongly of the evils of drinking at danco halls and cabarets. 1 notice that this matter has been referred to the Council’s Finance Committee. Can it bo true that the city is dependent for the upkeep of the Town Hall upon revenue derived from functions wher liquor is provided? It is a sorry plight for Dunedin if this is the case. If the law of “no liquor in dance halls and cabarets ” was enacted, then the Town Hall would be in the same position as all other halls for letting purposes. But apart from that a higher and better standard should be set for the citizens' Town Hall as an example to all others. It is understood that the Trades and Labour Council absolutely prohibits liquor in its hall in Moray place,—l am, etc., Puzzled Citizen. September 5.
