Sir John Roberts, Messrs G. R. Ri"* cine, C. W. Rattray, and S. K._ Sleigh left for Wellington this morning on Union Company’s business. Sir Lindo Ferguson went by the 11.35 a.m. train to-day for Wellington 1 o attend meetings of the Board of Health and the Medical Council. Drs Nevrlands and Riley travelled by the same train. Sir Louis Barnett was to join at Hampden. Dr D’Ath will also be a u Otago representative. . Mr S. H. Osborn went to-day tiy train to Ashburton to adjudicate in reciting at the competitions there. Dr Galway is to be the music judge. The Hon. D. T. Fleming, M.L.0., and Mr F. Waite, M.P., were passengers for Wellington by to-day’s tram from Dunedin. Mr W, M‘Kitterick came from Invercargill yesterday and went on to-day for Wellington. Mr H. Halligan arrived from Invercargill last night, and is hooked for return this evening. Mr G. W. Reid and Mr T. G. Bnckoil are on their way to Wellington for a meeting of the Society of Accountants, Mr James Begg and Mr W. J. A. M'Gregor left this morning to attend a meeting of the Meat Control Board in Wellington. Mr J. Morgan (of Oturehua) and Mr John Mackenzie (of Mount Nicholas) went to-day by the 11.35 train, ior Wellington, to be at a meeting of the Sheepowners’ Federation. The Director-General of Health (Dr T. H. A. Valintine) will retire from the service of the department at" the end of the present month. He has been granted six months’ leave on full pay. The Minister of Health stated last night that Dr Valintlne’s services would bo retained in an advisory capacity, and that as yet no successor had been appointed.—Press Association. At last night’s meeting of the Otago Acclimatisation Society the chairman (Mr C. A. Wilson) referred to the death of Mr G. L. Sise, a former member of the council of the society, and a motion of condolence with his relatives was carried. . At the Wellington Competitions Miss Margaret Seelye, of Dunedin, secured first place in : the ladies’ humorous recitation (open), with 86 points. In the Navy League recitation under sixteen, open to boys or girls, Miss Billie Robinson, also of Dunedin, 1 was second, go filing 82 points. Mr J. D. A. Scott, of Messrs White’s Sports' Depot, has returned to_ town after- five weeks’ tour, of the golf clubs in the North Island.' , • : “ Mr Alfred Walmsley, who sang the tenor solos in- - Carmen ’ -at--the Royal Wellington Choral Union’s last concert, has been engaged by the same society for its next concert, * The. Golden Legend,* early in October. • A cablegram, has been received from London stating that, Mr Lawrence Glover, an old M'Glashan College boy, and grandson of the late Mr J. A". Matthews, of the ‘Otago Daily Times/ has been accepted as a trainee .in the Royal Air Force. Mr Glover will commence his training early in-September. Staying at the Grand Hotel are Mr R.‘ M.
