MANCHESTER UNITY
The Loval United Juvenile Lodge met in the M.U. Hall, Stuart street, on Monday evening, a fa r muster of members being presided over by Acting N.G. Bro. Borrie. The N.G. (Bro. Janies), who has- been on the sick list (or some time, was reported to be making good progress. One member was received bv 'transfer from the Prince of Wales Juvenile Lodge. The annual initiation competition tor juvenile lodges, wh ch will take place this month, was discussed, and Bro. Stewart was appointed conductor for the team. A rehearsal was then held, the boys being coached by the adult members present. Alter business matters had bceai dealt with, ■allies were held for an hour, the mcetag then closing. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge on Tuesday evening was well attended by members and visiting brethren, N.G. tiro. Cotton being in the chair. _ Included in a bngthy correspondence list was a note .iscation from the Prov. C. Secretary regarding the half-yearly meeting oi the District Committee to be held in the Loyal Palmerston Lodge room on September 27. The letter requested that the delegates for this meeting be elected before August 27. A clearance inward from the Loyal Dalton Lodge was 'granted, and one new member was initiated. A special summoned meet ng was then held to appoint a trustee to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Bro. Llodger. Two nominations for the position were received, P.P.G.M. Bro. I. H. G. Clarke being elected. A question box was later held, providing good amusement for the large, gathering. It was decided to hold a dance next lodge night. N.G. Bro. Craig presided over the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Mosgiel Lodge on Tuesday evening. One candidate was initiated. The secretary of the Loyal Tnieri Juvenile Lodge [Bro. H. Irving) made a strong appeal to members or the parent lodge to take an interest in the juveniles. An occasional attendance by senior members would give some interest and encouragement to the younger brethren and their office-bearers. Some discussion on the subject took place, and it was decided to hold a meeting of the Management Committee of the Juvenile Lodge on Monday. The lodge decided to entertain kindred friendly societies next lodge night, an invitation being extended to city brethren to be present. The monthly meeting of the Loyal Tapanui Lodge was held on Thursday even ng, the N.G., Bro. E. Howat. in the chair. A welcome was extended to P.G. Bro. Duncan M‘Coll, who reEortcd attending the Loyal Tim am and gave an interesting account of M.U. activities in that town. Two candidates were initiated. The Loyal Princess Mary Lodge field its fortnightly meeting in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Forbury Corner, on Tuesday evening, the N.G., S.ster Bond, presiding over a fair attendance of members. Visiting brethren from Loyal Centenary, Dunedin, Cavcrsham, and Valley Lodges were welcomed. The adjourned summoned meeting was opened, Bro. Emerson reporting on tho
half-yearly balance-sheet. This disclosed the lodge to be in a satisfactory position, deckled increases in the funds and membersh p being recorded. The adjourned summoned meet J ing of the Loyal Tuapexa Pioneer Lodge was held on Tuesday evening. The N.G., Bro. A. Dimmock, presided, there bc.ng a good attendance ot officers and members. The inward correspondence included letters from a number of brethren now residing out of the district, which were read with interest. Two members were reported to bo inmates of hospitals, letters being received from them regarding thenprogress. The N.G. reported that a euchre tournament had been contested with the Star of Tuapeka Lodge, die latter lodge being victorious. One proposition for membership was received. The summoned meeting was then opened to receive the auditor’s report and balance-sheet, wh.ch showed that steady progress had been made •luring the half-year. Votes ot thanks wore passed to the trustees and auditors for their services, hi view or die anniversary of the lodge next month arrangements, it was stated, were being made to celebrate the occasion. At the Loyal Dunedin lodge room on Thursday evening there was an attendance of over 100 members of the order, the occasion being a combined official visit. The N.G., Bro. J. Roberts, presided, and extended a welcome to the visiting brethren, the majority of the city and suburban lodges being ■©presented. The P.D.G.M., Bro. it. Longworth, and P.P.D.G.M. Bro. P. Young, of the District Executive, were also present. A notice was received from the Prov. Secretary advising that the half-yearly meeting ot delegates would he held at Palmerston on Se<>toinher 27. A motion of sympathy was carried with Bro. C, B. Stewart on tlio dentil of ins father. The meeting was later adjourned, and a musical programme, contributed to by memoers and v.siting brethren, was enjoyed by all present. The P.D.G.M., on beliali of the District Executive, complimented the Dunedin Lodge on the success of tho official visit, which indicated that the fraternal and .social side of the order was not overlooked. Referring to the recent A.M.C. held at Plymouth I England) in June, the speaker stated that tho net surplus as revealed by the latest statistics in England was over £3,600,00U. The order was thus in a sound financial position. Bro. Young also spoke on benalf of the executive. Responses to the visitors’ toast were made on behalf of the various lodges present, and the evening closed with a hearty vote of thanks to the brethren who had contributed to the programme. Tho fortnightly mooting of Loyal Cavcrsham Juvenile Lodge, held m tho Oddfellows Hall, For bury corner, on Wednesday evening, attracted a good muster oi members, tho N.G., Bro. Kmith, presiding. After a practice lor the init ation coin,petition had been carried out, and the routine business transacted, the lodge adjourned. A programme of cinema pictures was then screened, P.G. Bro. Hey operating the machine. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Bro. W. Mowatt, who had arranged tho programme. After the lodge closed tho adult Management Committee met to deal with a number of business matters.
