(Received August 9, at 11 a.m.) Owing to neuritis in the. shoulder Hobbs had to retire from the field this afternoon to undergo special treatment. It is anticipated that lie will be fit for play in the final test match on the IGth. Australia’s star batsman, Bradman, is resting in London, having strained a toe in a match earlier in the week. (Received August 9, at 12.10 p.m.) At Southampton in the singles semifinals to-day Wood defeated Shields, 1-G, 1-6, 10-8, 7-5, 6-4; and Allison defeated Hunter, 6-4, 9-11, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. In the quarter-finals of the doubles. Wood and Shields beat Tilden and Hunter, 6-1, 6-3 PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ HOCKEY. SEVEN-A-SIDE TOURNEY. Tho seven-a-side girls’ hockey tourney of the primary schools was played to-day. High Street School won the A grade, beating Macandrew Road in the final by 2-0. The B grade was won by Milton, who beat Green Island in the final 3-0.
