—Vice-regal.— 1 Their Excellencies, Lord Bledislo© and Lady Bledisloe, visited _ some of the institutions of the Salvation Army yesterday (says a Wellington Press Association telegram), and when at . the Eventide Home at Island Bay, Her j Excellency met an old lady compatriot, j She was Mrs Jean Upton, ninety-five j years of age, who was born in Pem- i brokeshire, and arrived in New Zea- J land in 1863. Although the time at i their disposal only permitted of visit- I ing and inspecting headquarters in '■ Cuba street, the hostel _ in Boulcott j street, and the Old Ladies’ Home at Island Bay, their Excelliences were surprised at the extent of the work of the Salvation Army in the dominion, upon which they had already been^considerably informed by Commissioner and Mrs J. Cunningham. Mr H. Holliday is at present an inmate of the Stafford Hospital. Mr James Duncan, manager of, Messrs H. L. Tapleiy and Co., which firm acted as agents for the Byrd Ant-arctic-Expedition, has received an engraved wrist watch from Rear-admiral Byrd in. appreciation of the assistance given the expedition while here. Mr and Mrs Richard Hudson travelled by train to-day from Dunedin to Christchurch Mr A. J. Cooper left this morning by train for a business tour of th© north. Messrs J. S. Hislop and G._M. Maclean were passengers for Wellington by , the express to-day. The Rev. S. J. Cooper went to-day to Oamaru by train. _ f Mr H. T. Kitto, representing Daniel • Crawford and Son, of Glasgow, was in Dunedin this week and left to-day for Christchurch. Colonel J. Esson (chairman), Mr J. H. Jerrara (member), and Mr T. Mark (secretary, Public Service Commissioner), arrived last evening from Invercargill, and are staying at the, Grand Hotel. The Public Service Ap- ‘ peal Board will sit in Dunedin next ; week. Mr L. M do Berry, head . master: of the Normal School, has been ap- ] pointed head master of the Christchurch West District High School. ' The announcement by cablegram of ' the death of the Right Hon. Thomas i Robinson Ferens, a tbropist, of Hull (England), is of ln'terest in New Zealand, for some of his relations are settled in Otago. The deceased was for - sixty-three years in the employ of the Ricketts Company, rising from a junior position to -be managing director,' and he sat in the House of Commons in the Liberal interest, for twelve years. His gifts were on a princely scale, including £250,000 to found the Hull University, and a further £25,000. on opening day, and h© bestowed large sums upon the Methodist Church. He reached the age of eighty-three. His remains were cremated.
A pleasant function was held at tha Albany Street Associated Normal School when Miss M. Chambers, who has resigned from the teaching service, was fare welled by her fellowteachers. Tho head master (Mr W. Sproat) referred to the guest’s special equipment as . a.. teacher in. the infant, department, and presented to her. on behalf of the staff, suitable gifts for her new home. Miss Chambers, who has taken a grat interest in the Girls’Basket Ball Club, was entertained by its members, and . presented with. some Doulton ware as a. token of their'appreciation of her. services.-. • The latest guests to register at the Grand Hotel are Mr H. Haddock (Wellington). Professor Webb, Mr H. M. Crane (Christchurch), and Miss L. Lawrence (Invercargill). Among those staying at the City Hotel are Mr W. Fraser (Timaru), Miss B. Drake (Berwick), Mr and Mrs > J. W. Nicholson (Gore), and Mr L. Cobden (Invercargill).
