MOSGIEL BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING Mr W, E. M‘Loan (mayor) presided at the monthly meeting of the Mosgiel Borough Council held last night. REPORTS. ; The Works Committee detailed the surfacing work of the month, and reported as follows:—Regarding Messrs N. and E. S. Paterson’s application Lor the council’s'consent to too plan of subdivision of lots 39, 40, 55, and 56, block' V., West Mosgiel,. it was recominetided that this' plan of subdivision should be approved of. It was recommended that regarding the city electrical engineer’s application for a level crossing at Forfar street, the work should he proceeded with _ upon the usual terms. Regarding the district telegraph . engineer’s instructions for reinstating footpaths, it was recommended that the work should bo proceeded with when the weather was favourable. In connection with Mr James Brown’s letter regarding road formation at Green street, it was stated that Mr Brown had waited upon the committee to explain his requirements, and it had been resolved that as many of the committee as possible should inspect this work before next council meeting, - when the letter would ■be further dealt with. It was recommended that up to 240 cubic yards of screenings should be spread from the Mosgiel quarry upon the Gordon road highway, at not more than three yards to the chain. It was also recommended that the footpath in Burns street, from Knott’s Hotel to King street, should bo reformed- and spread with ashes, after which the water table had to be regraded. Four building permits and one.drainage permit had been granted. —-The report was adopted. The General Committee reported:—• Regarding Allan J. Souter’s application for licensing tho Exchange Social Hall, the committee recommended that this application should be handed to the fire inspector, and that if his report was favourable the license bo issued. Re the letter from the Box-on Company regarding waterproofing work at the Coronation Hall, the committee recommended that this matter should be held in abeyance until such time as the council’s finances woilld permit of tho committee giving consideration to the matter. The Rev. W. E. Lambert’s letter ‘had been received and noted.—Adopted. ■ The Finance Committee reported that tho receipts for the past month had been £355 2s 3d, and submitted and recommended for payment accounts amounting to £l3l 13s sd. Tho bank pass book showed a debit balance of £483 8s 7d.—Adopted. CORRESPONDENCE. The divisional superintendent of New Zealand Railways wrote regarding the Royal Commission, giving consideration to tho operation of railway branch lines. Ho wished to bo advised of any witnesses desiring to give evidence. —lt was decided that tho Mayor and Cr White should attend. The Rev. W. E. Lambert, Baptist Church, Mosgiel, wrote thanking tho mayor and councillors for their acceptance of tho church’s invitation to bo present at tho football service recently. —Received. Messrs N. and E. S. Paterson forwarded a sketch plan of the proposed subdivision of part of lot 2,_ block 111., East Taieri, showing the widening of Stuart street. They asked the council’s approval before proceeding with their plan.—The matter was discussed at length, and draft specifications submitted by the clerk were perused and adopted. It was decided to consult the borough solicitor on certain matters. The Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association forwarded a cheque, being the subsidy on tho recent work done out of tbo Poppy Day funds.—Received.

A complaint by a ratepayer was laid on the table regarding wandering cattle in Irvine street. —The ranger reported thereon. Ho denied that cattlo wandered there, as he had visited tho place regularly.—lt was decided to write to the complainant pointing out that the remedy lay in his own hands; the borough ranger having reported that there were no stray stock. The Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association wrote regarding the employment of men at the aerodrome.Noted. GENERAL. The additional amusement tax was discussed, arid it was decided that it be not imposed at present. Cr White asked what costs had been incurred in connection with tho hall for the Poultry Show. He had noticed in the Press a complaint from tho society at having to pay 10gs,—Tho clerk replied that the sum of £2 2s had been spent on cleaning the hall after the show, that the society had had the use of tho ball for Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, and the committee room had been used on several occasions for meetings.—Cr White said that some of the reports appearing in the Press did not give ratepayers a correct version of the position. The Alayor considered that a statement of the position should ho placed before the public. Ho bad thought the matter had been disposed of, and was surprised to hear of tho society’s complaint at its last meeting. —Cr White also mentioned that the Poultry Club had been offered a picture night; but this offer had been declined. He understood a statement _of tho council’s version of the position was to be published, and ho expressed surprise that this had not been carried out.—The clerk read to the council the letters sent to tho society, and it was resolved to publish those for the information of tho public.
