TO POLE BY SUBMARINE

SIR HUBERT WILKINS'S ATTEMPT CRAFT INSPECTED Frew Asioclation—By Telegraph—Copyright. NEW YORK, August 5. (Received August 6, at 10 a.m.) A message from Philadelphia states that Sir Hubert Wilkins inspected his submarine, which is at the navy yard awaiting its reconditioning. _ He announced that the craft was suitable for an attempt to reach the North Pole. Sir Hubert Wilkins hopes to travel 2,000 miles in his submarine across the North Polo in fifty days. Whenever ice blocks the course, ho will submerge. Ho estimates the average thickness of tho ice to be 10ft, but in order to avoid spikes, he will probably submerge 25ft. Ho estimates the submarine’s speed at 14 knots on the surface and 9 knots submerged, hut ho expects to average only 34 knots submerged. Ho will travel sixteen hours a day. A continuous talkie will bo made, Sir Hubert broadcasting from tho surface. One of tho explorer’s objects is to show that a submarine can land provisions at the North Polo, which suggests the possibility of maintaining a depot there all the year round.
