COUNCIL MEETING In the absence of the mayor (Mr H. E.‘ Moller) Gr A.-Smith was Voted to the chair at the monthly meeting of the .West Harbour Borough Council, held in the Council Chambers, R'avensbourne, last evening. Others present! were Crs T. H. Harridge, A. D. Asher, J. Robb, C. J. Hayward, C. G. H. Wilson, T. F.' Rodger, and J. M. Kay. CORRESPONDENCE. With regard to the present valuation, the West Harbour Ratepayers’Association expressed its dissatisfaction. After giving the matter every consideration, the committee requested the council to make a revaluation of the properties in the district. The committee also drew attention to the rubbish tip at Maia, stating that the place was unsightly and unhealthy. In was suggested i that a notice board be erected at the tip forbidding: the depositing ‘of _ unsightly rubbish there.The association also asked that a damaged handrail in High street be repaired and screenings placed on the footpath. ' The council' was’ also asked to have all work in the borough costing over £lO publicly tendered for, and not undertaken by the council’s permanent staff.—Cr Hayward .moved—- “ That the association be written to asking its specific reasons for wishing a revaluation.”—Cr Kay* said that, a revaluation was made three years ago, and he did not think there was any need for another at present.—Cr Harridge seconded the motion, stating that it might be pointed out that a revaluation would be very costly.—la regard to the Maia tip. the Town Clerk said it was evident that vegetable matter had been placed on it.—lt was decided that the association’s suggestion that a notice board be erected be complied with.—The council decided to take no action in regard to the request made in connection with borough work. A resident of Manuka street, Rayensbourne, wrote asking the council to . take ' steps to have the street repaired as soon as possible, , as it was in a very bad state.—Received, the matter to be left in the ■ hands of the borough inspector. A letter from Mr J. W. Munro. M.P., advised that he had interviewed the Minister in regard to the question of a late clearance of the Ravensbourne postal box, but he could not feel very hopeful that the council’s request would be fulfilled, owing to the present state of • the dominion’s finances.—Received. Authority to erect seven new electric lamps and to shift one was given by the city, electrical engineer. . Instructions had been ’ issued for tjio work to be done.-—Received.-general. .... ■ OA behalf of the-St. Leonards Progressive League, Cr Asher voiced the opinion that ut .was time the. footpaths in that” wqrd were ; plaped in proper older."Ho moved tliat.ah estimate of the cost of tar-sealing the footpath from Ravensboufnd to St. Leonards be obtained.—Carried. . ' REPORTS.. , The Borough Inspector reported that the culvert at. Blanket Bay had been repaired. The road grader had been employed'at various .places' during the month. Noticeable improvements had been jnade at the k corner of Junction road and the Slain road. _ Certain work in various places remained to -be done, and several footpaths required attention.—Adopted. ’ < The Works Committee recommended that all street gratings be repaired immediately, where required, and that the work 'referred to in the inspector • report be carried out.—Adopted. The Borough Engineer (Mr F. J. Williams) reported on the DunedmPort Chalmers road from April- 1 to Juno 30. The rfeport showed that the expenditure over that period amounted to £692 Is Sd. The cost to the local authorities concerned was as follows Dupedin City Council, £126 6s jd; West Harbour Council, £94 los; Port Chalmers Council, £3l 11s Sd.— Adopted • The Borough Health Inspector reported that, as the result of complaints received, an inspection :■ or Shandon street, Sawyers Bav, had been made, and it- was found that the residents had made a rubbishy duinp of the roadside opposite Mr Forgills residence. Ho suggested that the council erect a notice -board at tho spot prohibiting the depositing of refuse matter at any unauthorised place within the borough.—lt was decided to erect the notice, and the report was adopted. , . , The Finance Committee reported that during the .month £342 los 5d had been collected and £B9l 12s 6d had been expended, leaving a debit balance of £479 4s 4d.—Adopted.
