MOUNTAIN TRAGEDIES
LICENSING OF GUIDES [From Ons Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON August 5. Two suggestions for reducing the risks of accident in mountaineering were made by Mr Burnett (Temuka) in the course of a question in tho House. These were: (1) Giving authority to the managers of mountain resorts to stop all parties venturing out in dangerous weather; (2) licensing as Alpine guides only men of mature judgment, and not less than twenty-fivo years of age, and with at least three guarantors of fitness, both physical and mental. Ho suggested that tho Minister of Internal Affairs and the Minister in Charge of Tourist and Health Resorts take into consideration tho urgent necessity that exists for these departments to issue licenses to experienced Alpine guides, to mqn in charge of deer-stalking parties, and to men generally in charge of holiday parties in Alpine country.
