FALSE PRETENCES
SMALL SHOPKEEPER VICTIMISED In the Police Court this morning, before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., Robert Henry Brockio was charged with obtaining £1 2s 6d from Margaret Eugene Buie by falsely representing that he was the proprietor of the Dominion Sales Agency, and that an exercise book containing her advertisement would appear withm a fortnight. He pleaded guilty. Chief-detcctivo Cameron said that on May 29 the accused called on Mrs Bqie. a small shopkeeper at Musselburgh Rise, and said ho represented the Dominion Sales Agency, whose office was situated in the Octagon, and that lie was prepared, for a small sum, to insert an advertisement about her business in an exercise book which would bo circulated among the children of a nearby school. She handed over £1 2s 6d, and obtained a receipt. The exorcise books wore never issued. There was another complaint from a Mr Mac Lean, a coal merchant, who parted with •‘sos under somewhat similar circumstances on April 16. The accused had a record, and was discharged from prison just two' vears ago. lie was a innrricd man with one young child. ifis Worship said bo would like to have a report from the probation officer before dealing with Brockie, who was remanded til) Saturday to enable such a report to be obtained.
