CHATHAM CUP
CAUSE OF THISTLE’S DEFAULT [Special to the ‘ Star.’] AUCKLAND, August 6. An indignant protest was lodged by the delegates of the Thistle Club at a meeting of the. Control Board of the Auckland Football Association last evening against the New Zealand Council’s reported attitude in placing the blame of Thistle’s default to Petone in the Chatham Cup fixture on the Auckland club. The Thistle delegates contended that, after Petone’s request, forwarded through the New Zealand Council to postpone the fixture‘from August 2 to August 9, to which Thistle agreed, it was hardly fair to expect the latter club to fulfil the fixture on the original date. The chairman (Mr Andrew Menzics) was of opinion that the New Zealand Council intended to have the fixture played on August 2. He therefore did not agree with the council’s attitude in forwarding Petone’s request for a postponement until the following Saturday. The .general opinion of members of the board supported the chairman’s views. It was considered that the New Zealand Council’s attitude in not stating definitely that the fixture would have to be played on August 2 was the cause of the misunderstanding. 1t was finally decided to write to the New Zealand Council on these lines, refusing to accept any responsibility for the game not being played.
