FURNITURE FOR TOWN HALL.
TO TBS EDITOR, Sir,-—Mr Black answered '‘Free Lance’s ” letter by stating that the furniture was bought in Dunedin, but does he know where it was manufactured? Also, will Mr Black please tell the ratepayers why the work was not tendered for and on whoso authority the furniture was purchased, seeing that it was paid for by the City Council. The largest proportion of tho seating for the Town Hall went to a Wellrr*<ton firm; In this 1 understand on good authority that the tenderers did not quote on the one seat, but submitted samples. To my mind, a fairer way would have been for the council to "have bought the sample seats, then for everybody to tender on the seat or seats selected. By this, I am sure, ninny pounds would have been saved. Aga{n, why ask Dunedin ratepayers to contribute tc the local unemployment fund when so much work is given to northern towns?—l am, etc., Free Lance No. 2. August 6.
*«S TBS SIJITOB.
Sir,—Mr Black’s reply regarding the above matter is not altogether' satisfactory. Will he inform tho ratepayers which local firm or firms executed the order for the mayor’s room, or, on tho other hand, was the order given to a certain Dunedin firm, who are agents for a particular Christchurch furniture factory?—l am, etc.. Free Lance. August 6. [When shown tho above letters, the mayor replied; “No tenders were called for the furnishings. They were inspected and then ordered as being in keeping with the rooms. The order was given to Mr T. Wight, of Moray place, who also carried out the drapings for the Town Hall.—Ed. E.S.’ ]
