NEW ZEALAND OARSMEN

TRAINING ON WANGANUI RIVER ALL SHAPING WELL [Special to th» ‘ Spar.’] WANGANUI, Juno 13. The oarsmen selected to train with a view to representing New Zealand at the Empire Games have been putting in steady work on Wanganui River since Wednesday. The first day the weather was very unpleasant, being cold and wet, with a biting w’ind, but since then, conditions have improved, and the water is in splendid order for rowing. Two rows daily have been the order, each over about eight miles, at a steady pace. So far, the coach (Mr H. Ayers) lias been experimenting with a view to sorting out the best of the material at his disposal. Four of the morning eight men stand out in the afternoon. All hands are very keen, and are rowgni well, and it will be hard luck for the two who are to bo eliminated after all have been thoroughly tried out. When the final choico is made the crew should be a good ono, capable of upholding the high reputation established by dominion oarsmen by victories in Australia and in the great races after the war on the Thames. Despite cha iges in the crew every row, the men, are steadily getting together, and next week should see them rowing with a good swing, and settling down to solid business. From what has been seen of the rowing so far, it is fairly safe to predict that the following will make one of the strongest combinations ;—Brough (stroke), Sandos, McDonald, Olsson, Gilbey, Thompson,

Saunders, aiid Waters (bow). This crew make up a well-balanced eight, and already they row with rhythm and power, giving much promise. If this cre.v can be improved upon, then indeed the dominion should bo worthily represented at the Games.
