WOMAN’S £43,000 FINE

UNITED STATES CUSTOMS RECORD NEW YORK, May 2. Tho largest personal fine in tho history of the United States Customs was paid to-day by Mrs Robert Dodge, tho wealthy president of a cosmetic manufactiir ing concern, as a penalty for attempting to smuggle jewels, furs, and clothing. A cheque for approximately £43,000 was deposited with the Customs by Mrs Dodge’s attorneys This sum represented 100 per cent, of the value of the goods undeclared or undervalued, and special fines. Mrs Dodge arrived in New York from Franco two weeks ago with twelve trunks containing goods worth £20,000. A private “tip” from a French salesman led to special investigation and seizure. Further investigation revealed that considerable quantities of goods had been smuggled on four previous trips by Mrs Dodge. It is estimated that the Customs authorities will pay tho French informer about £IO,OOO in “ commissions.” In deciding not to prosecute Mrs Dodge the United States Attorney took _ into consideration the fact that she is now seriously ill.
