SOUTH ISLAND STEAMER SUBSIDY
LAPSED WITH MANUKA’S LOSS [Reh United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, June 10. The fact that the extended Government mail subsidy on the steamer service betwen Australia and South Island ports has lapsed was mentioned to-day by the Postmaster-General (Mr J. B. Donald). Last year the Union Steam Ship Company entered into an arrangement. with the Government to place an extra steamer on the run between Melbourne and Wellington and South Island ports. The subsidy for the main service was fixed at £.38,000 a year, to bo paid by the Post and Telegraph Department. However, the .Manuka, which with the Maheno was to carry on a new service, was wrecked on December 16 of last year. As she has not yet been replaced the _ augmented subsidy has lapsed, and the Union Steam Ship Company is now subsidised only on the old rate for one vessel. “I do not think any stops have yet been taken to replace the Manuka,” Mr Donald said. “ Following her Joss the Government’s arrangement with the Union Company definitely lapsed, but if another vessel wore available for the service the matter would probably be reconsidered.”
