ARBITRATION COURT
APPRENTICESHIP AFFAIRS The last sitting of the present visit of the Arbitration Court was held this morning, when several apprenticeship matters were dealt with. His Honour Mr Justice Frazer presided, and with him were Messrs W. Cecil Prime and A. L. Monteith. Referring to an apprentice in the motor mechanics’ trade, Mr G. S. Lightfoot (inspector of factories) explained that the lad had not been properly taught' by two former employers, and the present employer wished the apprenticeship order extended in order that the boy might complete bis training.—Mr A. J. Rice, a member of the Apprenticeship Committee, gave the committee’s point of view.—The : application was granted, His Honour stating that this decision must not be taken as a precedent. The committee would be justified in acting in the same way in similar cases that might com© before it, although any such action would not be regarded as a precedent. It was a case of dealing with special instances in a special manner. In regard to another case‘His Honour said that if the application of the employer was allowed it would bo a breach of the proportion clause, because the provision was for one .apprenticeship and one journeyman. But, in order that the youth might not lose the knowledge he had already gained,i an under-rate worker's permit would be allowed until the lad was properly apprenticed in three months’ time A number of other matters were formally approved.
