DARING THIEVES

SET FIRE TO SHOP [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, May 14.. A fire attended by sensational circumstances occurred at the corner of Clyde road, Fendalton, early this morning. Thieves raided a block of four shops by first smashing in the front doors,, and then set fire to one, a tobacconist’s shop tenanted by Mr Fred. Whiteman. This was gutted, and the others were damaged by smoke and water, the brigade effecting a good save. Subsequently the police found an abandoned car in Linwood containing the stock stolen—tobacco, etc. Later in the night thieves, believed to have been the same, entered a shop in Stanmore road, Linwood, and stole £l4 from the till. They were disturbed and decamped, leaving behind on the road a motor car stolen last evening from Cambridge terrace.
