The Minister of Agriculture (Mr (*» W. Forbes) has accepted the Otago A. and P. Society’s invitation to open iho Winter Show on Saturday, May 31, at 2 p.m. ... Sir Thomas and Lady bidey left this morning by the through express for Wellington. The meeting of the liuiversity Senate is Sir Thomas’s first appointment in the capital so far as pa tike business is concerned. He will , return to Dunedin to open Selwyn College on Sunday week. . " The members of the Arbitration Court (Mis Honour Mr Justice Frazer, and Messrs W. Cecil Prime and A. L. Monteith) concluded their Dunedin sittings this morning, and will leave for Oamaru to-morrow morning. An adjournment matter will be dealt with, there, and the court will cross oyer to Wellington on Friday night. A sitting will commence at Nelson on May 23, followed by sittings at Westport on May 27, Greymouth on May 30, and Christchurch on June 7. _ A very pleasant function took place at Woodhaugh on Saturday, when Mr and Mrs Robert Macdonald celebrated their golden wedding at the residence of their son. Mr and Mrs Macdonald arrived in Dunedin fifty-two years ago, and were married in Dunedin by the Rev. Rutherford Waddell, who also officiated at the golden wedding. Mr Macdonald was well known as a nour miller, remodelling and managing the Leith Flour Mills for a period of thirtythree years (1892-1826). He resided in Woodhaugh for over forty years, and took a keen interest in, local affairs, being a member of the Maori Hill Borough Council. He was also an elder and social worker for St. Stephen s Church under the ministry of the Rev, Gibson Smith. Mr and Mrs Macdonald’s family of four sons and. four daughters were all present, also the bridesmaid (now Mrs W. Drury, or Wellington). The breakfast was held in the Woodhaugh Hall, where the usual toasts were honoured and congratulary telegrams were read. fh« guests then adjourned to the residence of Mr and Mrs W. P. Macdonald, where an enjoyable evening was spent in dancing and music. ■ Mr G. L. M‘Lean, accountant at the Napier Post Office, has been promoted to a similar position in the Dunedin office, succeeding Mr E. M. Jackson, who has retired after completing forty years’ service with the Postal _ Department. , Our Auckland correspondent telegraphs that Mr. Orton S- Hintz (“ Budge ”), who joined the ‘ Herald staff six years ago, has been appointed tire New Zealand Press Association’s representative on the 1931 English tour of the dominion cricketers. He is twenty-two years old, and was educated at Auckland and Mount Albert Grammar Schools, and Auckland University". , , . ... Reference was made at last mgnt s meeting of the executive of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association to the death of Dr T. Harrison, who bad in the early days of the organisation filled the post of president for four consecutive years. The Chairman (Mr W. F. Forrester) said that the present satisfactory position of the association was in a large measure due to the work done by Dr Harnspn at that time. A motion of appreciation of Dr Harrison’s services during .his connection with the assocation and conveying the sympathy of the members to the relatives was passed, members standing in silence, after which the meeting was adjourned for .a tew minutes. . - reference to the death or Mr J. Crosby Smith was made, at the Otago Institute meeting last night by the president (Mr S. Angel) and Dr Holloway. Mr Crosby Smith was an old and highly, valued member of the institute, and one . who had done a great deal to advance its welfare. Da the motion of Dr Holloway the members expressed their deep regret at the death of Mr Smith, a former president and life member of the branch and their appreciation of his long interest in the institute and his field work in-’ connection with botany in Otagp and Southland. The motion was carried m silence, those present standing for a few moments. I The death occurred last night of Mrs Alexander Boyle after a very brief illness. Mrs Boyle was president of the women’s branch of the Canterbury Centre of the Red Cross Society from the early days of the war,,when it came into existence, and was in charge of the Red Cross depots which did so much to provide comforts for soldiers overseas and in camp in the dominion. For her work among the soldiers she was awarded the 0.8. E. She was one of the foundation members of the Christchurch, Ladies Golf Club, was president of the club for many years, also captain. She was president of the women’s branch of the Navy League. Mrs Bovle, who was the widow ot Alexander Boyle, a prominent citizen or Christchurch, and the eldest daughter of Mr Michael Studholme, was born at Waimate in 1861. She is survived bv two sons and two daughters: Commander A. D. Boyle. late of the Royal Navy, and now with Pyno, Guiness. Ltd.. Timaru. and Mr A. X. Bovle, of Pyne. Gould, Gumess. Waimate. and Mrs Algar Williams and Miss Phyllis Boyle.—Christchurch correspondent. “ It does not seem like an annual meeting in the absence ,of the late Sir George Fenwick,” said Mr J. "J. Clark at the annual meeting of the Otago Patriotic Association this mornin» Mr Clark said that the late Sir George had been a member since the association’s inception in 1914, and ms services had been marked by a spirit of loyalty and co-operation. It was on such occasions as the annual meeting that the sense of loss sustained by the death of the late Sir George Fenwick became more mark,id. A Press Association cable message from London states that Mr Thomas Henry Jones, who was for some time an engineer in Tasmania and New Zealand, left £19,644. Registered at the Grand Hotel are Mr E.
