TO EXPLORE CANADA

SOCIETY FORMED The Canadian Gcograpiikal Society, one of tho dominion's newest national organisations, was able to report a membership running into the thousands when the first annual meeting was held at Ottawa recently. The society was organised only a> few months ago, and is intended to fill a place in Canada such as is occupied in the United Kingdom by the Royal Geographical and ihe Royal Scottish Geographical. Tho list of officers is headed by tho GovernorGeneral as honorary patron, and includes foremost scientists, explorers, and professional men of every province. Dr Robert Camsell, of Ottawa, deputyM inkier of Alines for Canada, is president. Groat need for an organisation which would make Canada known more widely and more accurately not only to outsiders, but to her own people lias been experienced tor years, and particularly since the Northern areas began to open before the prospector and tbo explorer. Dr Camsell has elated that though Canada is one of tho largest, countries of the world, fully half of her area is very imperfectly known and about one-quarter, exclusive of the Arctic islands, is quite unexplored. Tho Canadian Geographical Society is intended to collect and distribute accurate information of tho dominion's more remote parts, and as well to make known the geography, culture, and resources of tho settled areas. The new society has received a most cordial welcome from scientific organisations throughout the Empire, and encouraging public support in this country. It will publish an official journal under tho direction of Lawrence J. Burpee, of Ottawa, secretary of (he Canadian section, of the International Joint Commission along the general lines of the Royal C eograpliicai Joanud.
